Class notes from the 1930s
1938Sam Shannon lives in Yuba City. He recalls the days when the campus was a branch of UC Berkeley and writes: “There used to be several Davis grads here in the Yuba City/Marysville area, but the ones I know are gone. Good luck to all. . . P.S. I’m 91 years old.” His daughter, Charlene (Shannon) Orthel ’72, and her husband, Glenn, have two daughters, and live in Idaho. (appeared in the Spring 2013 issue) |
1939Sarah (Mulock) Duncan is the curator of the San Gabriel Museum and remains active in the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, the San Gabriel Community Coordinating Council and the Mission District Partnership Committee. In 1998, San Gabriel named her Older American of the Year. After graduating from UC Davis, Duncan attended California State University, Los Angeles, taught kindergarten for 30 years and raised two sons. She lives on land that was part of her grandparents' ranch and still visits former Davis roommates Kay Lilienthal Wooden and Eleanor Robinson Williamson. (appeared in the Spring 2000 issue) • Sarah Mulock Duncan has been an active volunteer since she retired from 30 years of kindergarten teaching in 1979. She is co-curator of the San Gabriel Museum and is active with the Chamber of Commerce, the San Gabriel City Coordinating Council and Delta Kappa Gamma, Epsilon chapter. She writes that she also does a lot of gardening and has two grown sons and two grandchildren: "Life has been busy and good!" (appeared in the Spring 2002 issue) • James Leathers died in September 2003 at age 84. He worked as a farmer in Yolo County and served on agricultural and environmental committees, as many as 22 at a time. Mr. Leathers will be remembered for his public service, which included 40 years as chair of the Federal Land Bank board in Yuba County. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons Timothy, Patrick, Michael and Scott; daughter Joan; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (appeared in the Winter 2004 issue) • Stan Hill worked in the farm and construction equipment industry and in association management for over 50 years. He and his wife, Marian, live in Lafayette. (appeared in the Fall 2004 issue) • Earl McConnell has retired from farming and now enjoys traveling, snow skiing and windsurfing. A member of the first UC Davis swim team, he is still a close follower of Davis sports. McConnell lives in Walnut Creek. (appeared in the Spring 2008 issue) • Ruth (Thomas) Boswell of El Cerrito, who attended UC Davis in the late 1930s, died in March. She was 89. She is survived by her son, Laurence, and his wife, Sandra; her grandchildren, Ken and Emily Wenzler; and her great-grandchildren, Ashlee Ware, Nigel Boswell and Olivia and Elena Wenzler. Her husband of 57 years, Richard Boswell, died in 1999. (appeared in the Winter 2010 issue) • Bob Emerson died peacefully at his Redding home of old age in March. He was 97. He was a member of Calpha fraternity and active for many years in the Cal Aggie Alumni Association. His 1948–77 career with Bank of America took him the length of California, to Washington, D.C., and around the world. He is survived by his wife, Leora “Sandy” (Sandstad) ’37; two daughters, including Karen Pulley ’63; two grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. (appeared in the Summer issue) |
