1994Brad DeBlanc has become an associate at Los Angeles law firm Carrick and Ramey, LLP. (appeared in the Fall 2003 issue) • Kevin Newby, Derick Daily '97 and Mike Fung '98 started Kadium, an agency based in San Francisco that specializes in Web development and marketing. The firm employs a number of other Aggies, including project managers Val Beveridge '96 and Zach Schwartz '96 and designers Toby Gunderson '95, Soyung Pak '95 and Janice Tzeng '98. (appeared in the Fall 2003 issue) • Dan Strawn has been inducted into the University of Idaho chapter of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society for his work as faculty member and soil chemist. (appeared in the Fall 2003 issue) • Sylvia Martinez Banks and Danny Banks '95 welcomed their new son, Davis James, last August. He was named after the city where his parents met on their first day as freshmen at UC Davis in 1990. They also have a 4-year-old daughter, Alysa. (appeared in the Winter 2004 issue) • Pete Hall is in his second year as principal of Anderson Elementary School in Reno, Nev. He recently hired Nina (Quaccia) Brunetti '99 to teach first grade. (appeared in the Winter 2004 issue) • Kari Granthan Brewer, J.D. ’00, and Gary Brewer ’99 welcomed a son, Justin William, in November. The family lives in Elk Grove and has a nursery decorated in a cow theme to honor the couple’s UC Davis roots. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Pete “Pele” Faeth is a captain and helicopter pilot in the U.S. Marine Crops. He returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom and is deployed now to Okinawa, Japan. His wife, Cynthia, and their three children, Shelby, Parker and Tessa, are at their home in Temecula. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Thomas Fahy is the author of Night Visions, a novel set for release this fall. He teaches literature and music on California’s central coast. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Matthew Hargrove received the Edwin Crawford Award for Innovation in State Relations from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. Hargrove, director of government relations at UC Davis, was honored for his efforts, initiative and innovation in advancing the legislative goals of the university. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Ripan Malhi, M.A. ’98, Ph.D. ’01, and Jason Eshleman, M.A. ’99, Ph.D. ’02, both research associates in the UC Davis anthropology department, are the founders of Trace Genetics, a genealogy firm with the largest Native American DNA database in the world. Since it opened in January 2003, the firm has analyzed hundreds of samples to help identify the Native American ancestry of its clients. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Kristina Dong Pavao and her husband, Matthew, are the proud parents of Maggie Sophia, born in October. The family lives in Pacifica. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Erika (Olson) Wilson and her husband, Mike, had their first baby, Andrew Charles, in January. The family lives in Reno, Nev. (appeared in the Spring 2004 issue) • Michelle Discher is an English teacher at Menlo School in Atherton and president of the California Classical Association, Northern Section, and editor of its newsletter. She lives in Redwood City with her husband, Doug, and daughter, Lily. Her son, Max, is a freshman at Morehouse College in Atlanta. (appeared in the Summer 2004 issue) • Sunil Dutta, Ph.D., a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department, was awarded a medal by the department in February for saving the life of a young man who had threatened to burn himself. A trained crisis negotiator, Dutta managed to stop the man, saving the individual’s life and protecting the people around him. (appeared in the Summer 2004 issue) • Carol McConnell, D.V.M., joined Veterinary Pet Insurance in Brea as manager of veterinary education and service. She is the recipient of several awards, including the American Veterinary Medical Association national award for promoting the profession. (appeared in the Summer 2004 issue) • Christina Oropeza was recently named marketing and communication manager for Partech International, a venture capital firm in San Francisco. Oropeza lives in Pleasant Hill with her husband. (appeared in the Summer 2004 issue) • Jobert Lacebal is working toward a degree in nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno. (appeared in the Fall 2004 issue) • Thomas Fahy’s debut suspense novel, Night Visions, was published in November by Harper Collins. He lives on California’s central coast. (appeared in the Winter 2005 issue) • Michael Cholerton, vice president and manager of BCPI/Accrete Construction Co. in Tacoma, Wash., was named one of “40 Under 40” top young executives for 2004 by the South Puget Sound Business Examiner. (appeared in the Winter 2005 issue) • Daniel Meza was recently promoted to associate at Ratcliff, an architecture, interior design and planning firm in Emeryville.
