| 1996Robin Ekiss, M.A., received a 2007 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award—a $25,000 prize given annually to six women writers in the early stages of their careers. She is finishing her first book of poems, The Mansion of Happiness. (appeared in the Winter 2008 issue) • Katie Gordon-Ho was married to Eduardo Ho in September 2006 in Atascadero.Deanna (Bean) Kennedy ’99 and Tracy (Doherty) Ingebrigtsen ’94 were attendants. Gordon-Ho is an associate biologist for Rincon Consultants Inc. The couple had their first child, Margarete Lilliana, in August. (appeared in the Winter 2008 issue) • David Gutierrez is a United States diplomat at the U.S. Department of State and deputy director of the Biological Weapons Office in Washington, D.C. He has been on U.S. diplomatic delegations to Libya, Pakistan and Argentina promoting scientific collaboration with foreign scientists. (appeared in the Winter 2008 issue) • Holly Berkley is the author of two Internet marketing business books, Marketing in the New Media and Low Budget Online Marketing for Small Business. Berkley works in San Diego as an Internet marketing consultant and teaches a course on the subject at San Diego State University. (appeared in the Spring 2008 issue) • Marla (Gomez) Dolcini and her husband, Matt, had their second child, Isabella Marie, in April. She joined her sister, Alyssa Michelle, and her stepbrother, Nicholas Gary. They live in Davis where Matt is a local real estate agent. (appeared in the Spring 2008 issue) • Carl Switzer has been elevated to partner in the San Francisco-based law firm Farella Braun + Martel. He maintains a construction litigation practice, as well as assisting other businesses with partnership, real estate and contractual disputes. (appeared in the Summer 2008 issue) • Erwin Taganas works as a senior electrical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M. He recently married Andrelee Garcia, a physician, and braved a 450-foot bungee jump in New Zealand in 2007. (appeared in the Summer 2008 issue) • Melissa Veselovsky is the director of Healing Through the Body of Christ Cancer Ministry for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, as well as director of a chapel being built by Christ the King Catholic Church in Mesa, Ariz. The chapel will support people affected by cancer and feature a healing garden, cancer-related resource material and prayer services. (appeared in the Summer 2008 issue) • David Chao, a regional manager for Cisco WebEx, won a Stevie Award for Best Sales Representative in the 2008 American Business Awards program. Chao, who works out of Rancho Cordova, ranks in the top 1 percent of worldwide corporate sales for Cisco WebEx. He writes a blog that can be found at davidchao.typepad.com. (appeared in the Fall 2008 issue) • David Cheng has joined the San Francisco office of law firm Nixon Peabody as a member of its tax controversies and litigation team. (appeared in the Fall 2008 issue) • Zeena Fakoury is the founding director of sales and has overseen the opening of Cavallo Point, The Lodge at the Golden Gate, a luxury hotel that opened on the site of the former Fort Baker at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. (appeared in the Fall 2008 issue) • David Chao, a regional manager at Cisco-WebEx, won the Stevie Award for "Best Sales Representative of 2008" from American Business Awards. Chao ranks in the top 1 percent of worldwide corporate sales for Cisco-WebEx and is the top producer in the Rancho Cordova office. He was also recently promoted to manager of North America and Canada sales. He previously served as a sports anchor and reporter at WTHR in Indianapolis and WZZM in Grand Rapids, Mich. He is a member of the National Black Journalists Association and the Radio Television News Directors Association. He and his wife, Yasmin, have two children, Emet and Cyrus. Dawson, which means “Son of David,” joins sisters Phoebe and Tatum. David is a national sales manager at Cisco/WebEx and Patricia is a compensation benefits analyst for Xyratex. (appeared in the Summer issue) • Jason Mikami, M.B.A., fulfilled the dream of three generations of his family, with the recent launch of Mikami Vineyards, www.mikamivineyards.com. Using his family’s vineyards in Lodi, the winery released its inaugural 2008 vintage in April. Mikami has taken various viticulture and enology courses at UC Davis. (appeared in the Summer 2010 issue) • Kristin Mortensen ’96, a Sacramento-area career counselor and marriage and family therapist, died in February at age 35. After graduating from UC Davis with a degree in human development, she earned a master’s degree in career counseling from Sacramento State University and later earned a second master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from National University. Over the past decade, she worked for the city of Sacramento, Hope Counseling, Dixon Family Services, Yolo County, UC Davis, Chapman University and in private practice as a career counselor and marriage and family therapist. Survivors include her husband, Jake and sons, Spencer Gartin and Teige Russell, all of West Sacramento; sister Katie Marie Gerber of San Francisco; parents Dave and Nancy Gerber of Morgan Hill; and in-laws Rod and Barbara Mortensen of Modesto. (appeared in the Summer 2010 issue) • Melissa Stein, M.A., won this year’s APR/Honickman First Book Prize for her poetry collection, Rough Honey (American Poetry Review/Copper Canyon Press). Her poems have been featured in the New England Review, Best New Poets 2009 and the Harvard Review. She works as a freelance editor and writer in San Francisco. (appeared in the Fall 2010 issue) • Construction attorney Sean-Thomas Thompson is a new partner in the real estate and construction practice Hanson Bridgett law firm in Sacramento.
