2000Aaron Maguire, J.D., and Jennafer (Casterton) Maguire welcomed their first child, Madeline Rose, in April. Aaron was recently appointed as a deputy legislative affairs secretary for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and previously worked in the attorney general’s office. They live in Sacramento. (appeared in the Fall 2009 issue)   Frank Kobayashi received his Ed.D in educational leadership from UC Davis. He currently works at West Valley College in Saratoga as the director of contract education. (appeared in the Winter 2010 issue)    Shannon Seed-Hardwicke was featured in the September issue of Inside East Sacramento in an article “Giving Back to East Sac.” She practices community development in the area served by Theodore Judah Elementary School. (appeared in the Winter 2010 issue)    Matthew Westoby and Michelle (Modrich) Westoby welcomed their son, Tyler Davis, in September. Matthew works for a biotech company and Michelle is in commercial real estate. They live in Carlsbad. (appeared in the Winter 2010 issue)    Jeffrey Maurer of El Portal died in August after falling while rock climbing in Yosemite National Park. He was 47. For the past three years, Mr. Maurer worked at Yosemite as a wildlife biologist and specialized in raptors. During his time at UC Davis, he was a lecturer as well as a researcher, studying lead poisoning in California condors. He also taught with the Yosemite and Sierra institutes. A memorial blog has been created at http://yosemite-jeffmaurer.blogspot.com. (appeared in the Winter 2010 issue)    Sheila (Romero) Lewis and Sean Lewis married in Oak Hills last April. She earned her master’s degree from the University of London in 2004 and now works for the city of Los Angeles. Gloria Ng and her partner, Dapo, welcomed their firstborn son, Ayotunde. Gloria continues her blog as the “Feng Shui Gal.” (appeared in the Spring 2010 issue)    Sonal Ambegaokar, J.D., a national expert on immigrant access to heath care, received the Annual Public Interest Award from the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California Public Interest Foundation in March for her work advancing immigrant access to health care. She analyzes federal, state and local policies regarding accessibility to affordable heath care for immigrants, and makes recommendations to policymakers and opinion leaders for the National Immigrant Law Center. She previously served as supervising attorney of the Health Consumer Center of Los Angeles. (appeared in the Summer 2010 issue)    Erica Johnson, Ph.D., was granted tenure with a promotion to associate professor of English at Wagner College in New York. She has written Caribbean Ghostwriting (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press 2009) and Home, Maison, Casa: The Politics of Location in Works by Jean Rhys, Marguerite Duras, and Erminia Dell’Oro (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press 2003). Last year she won Wagner College’s Outstanding Teacher Award. (appeared in the Fall 2010 issue)    Shawn Sherburne began a new job as manager of classified operations with the San Francisco Unified School District in December. (appeared in the Winter 2011 issue)    Kathy Rousso, M.F.A., recently wrote Maguey Journey: Discovering Textiles in Guatemala (University of Arizona Press), based on research she began with a 2001–02 Fulbright grant. (appeared in the Winter 2011 issue)    Alexander Chow, creative director of Vogue China, was recently interviewed by Shanti Christensen for her China food blog, showshanti.com. Before moving to Beijing, Chow spent eight years in New York City and one year in London working for publications such as NYLON, POP Magazine and Love Magazine. (appeared in the Winter 2012 issue)    After serving in the Peace Corps in the West Indies, Geoffrey and Kimberly (Parker) Matranga now live in Washington, D.C. They both work for the State Department. In October, Matt and Michelle (Modrich) Westoby welcomed their second child, Ella Rose. She joins her brother, Tyler Davis, 2. They live in Chapel Hill, N.C., where Matt works in the biotechnology field. (appeared in the Winter 2012 issue)    Leila Azari is an attorney with the Los Angeles trust and estate litigation firm, Sacks Glazier Franklin & Lodise. She previously was a litigation associate with Latham & Watkins, where her practice focused on complex commercial disputes, securities class actions and white-collar crime investigations. She attended New York University School of Law after graduating from UC Davis. (appeared in the Summer 2012 issue)    Jessica (Stockton) La Londe was recently named a partner in the San Francisco office of the Duane Morris law firm. Her practice focuses on commercial and insurance coverage litigation. She was named a “Northern California Rising Star” by Super Lawyers magazine in 2010 and 2011. She graduated with honors in 2003 from the George Washington University Law School, where she was an editor for The Public Contract Law Journal. (appeared in the Summer 2012 issue)    Michelle (Hand) Huffman, a West Virginia restaurateur, died in July after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was 35. She and her husband, Alan, opened Spicy Gringo’s Mexican Restaurant in Wellsburg, W.V., in 2011. She was an avid supporter of the Relay for Life organization. (appeared in the Fall 2012 issue)    Brooke Humphrey, M.S., Ph.D. ’04, has been named global technology director for pork at Cargill’s innovation campus in Elk River, Minn. Humphrey joined the Minneapolis-based agribusiness in 2010, after seven years teaching and researching animal science at the University of Maryland and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. (appeared in the Fall 2013 issue)    Lorrell (Kenney) Walter is public relations manager for High West Energy, a not-for-profit electric cooperative in Pine Bluffs, Wyo. Walter recently relocated from upstate New York, where she served as the director of public relations for the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse for nearly seven years. She and her husband, Jim, live in Cheyenne with their daughter, Loriana. (appeared in the Spring 2014 issue)    Tax attorney Joseph Cruz, J.D., was recently promoted to principal at Ernst & Young’s office in Irvine.
  (appeared in the Fall 2014 issue)    A graphic novel by Anya Ulinich, M.F.A., Lena Finkle’s Magic Barrel, was released by Penguin Books this summer to critical praise by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Slate, Publishers Weekly and other publications. Her 2007 novel, Petropolis, has been translated into 10 languages. She has taught at New York University and Gotham Writers’ Workshop. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her two daughters.
  (appeared in the Fall 2014 issue)    Matt and Michelle (Modrich) Westoby welcomed their third child, Emerson Marie, in November. She joined brother Tyler Davis and sister Ella Rose. They live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Matt works in biotechnology. (appeared in the Spring 2015 issue)
