2001Heather Mackenzie graduated magna cum laude from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. (appeared in the Winter 2005 issue) • Carson Spear, a 1st lieutenant with the 1st Cavalry Division based out of Ft. Hood, Texas, earned a Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds suffered when his Humvee was blown off the road in Iraq. In June, a Jerusalem Post article described civic construction projects conducted by Spears’ platoon and quoted him about the threat of roadside bombs. (appeared in the Winter 2005 issue) • Christy Brigham, Ph.D., is a restoration ecologist for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. (appeared in the Spring 2005 issue) • Bryan Avila is the consulting enologist for Vinquiry, a wine analytical lab in Windsor. He lives in Healdsburg with his wife, Sara, and their two small boys. (appeared in the Summer 2005 issue) • First Lt. Kit Conn is an air-refueling aircraft commander with the 9th Airlift Squadron, 436th Airlift Wing. He has served four years in the Air Force. (appeared in the Summer 2005 issue) • First Lt. John Franklin of the Marine Corps is currently stationed at the Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nev. He serves as an air intercept control instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School, commonly known as TOPGUN. (appeared in the Summer 2005 issue) • Wendy Gonzalez was honored by the West Contra Costa Public Education Fund for her work as a bilingual teacher at Richmond’s Ford Elementary School. Gonzalez, a Ford alum, offers extra tutoring and support for her students and spends her weekends speaking on behalf of public education. (appeared in the Summer 2005 issue) • Laurie Hill and Brian Massey ’01, D.V.M. ’03, were married in August in Encinitas. Hill is a nursing student at California State University, Sacramento, and Massey is a veterinarian in Sacramento. Their wedding party included Jennafer Casterton. (appeared in the Summer 2005 issue) • Sam Paneno was one of 12 recipients of a University of Southern California Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship. Paneno, a former star running back for the Aggies, sustained a knee injury in 1999 that required his leg to be amputated. He is currently in his third year of law school at UC Davis, is a recipient of the NCAA Inspiration Award and is the first recipient of a Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship who wasn’t attending USC. (appeared in the Summer 2005 issue) • Jodi Angel, M.A. ’03, has written a collection of short stories, The History of Vegas (Chronicle Books). (appeared in the Fall 2005 issue) • Michelle Leinfelder graduated from Cornell University with a Master of Science degree in horticulture. She also received a fellowship from Cornell to do a year of horticulture studies in Spain, Chile and New Zealand. (appeared in the Fall 2005 issue) • Erik McGoldrick and Davita (Anderson) McGoldrick ’03 welcomed their first daughter, Aedin Ai-Lan, in December. Their son, Jasen, is 4. Erik and Davita met freshman year in their dorm, Emerson Hall. They will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary this fall. The family lives in St. Louis, Mo., where Erik attends medical school. He will graduate in May 2007. (appeared in the Fall 2005 issue) • Mike and Malea (Doore) Mordaunt were married in September 2004 in Saratoga. The wedding party included Trudi Opton ’00, Kelly Pisani ’02, Katie Devany ’02, Matt Carlson, Pat Rien, Jesse Woodhull and Andy Hamilton. Malea works as a first-grade teacher, and Mike is a district manager for Gallo Winery. The couple lives in San Francisco. (appeared in the Fall 2005 issue) • Holly Ober, Ph.D., recently opened a clothing store, The Naked Threat, in downtown Davis. It offers clothing made from environmentally friendly materials, including hemp, hemp silk, organic cotton and bamboo. Ober is also an anthropology lecturer at UC Davis. (appeared in the Fall 2005 issue) • Lindsay Guetschow is the outreach director for the Virtual March on Washington to Stop Global Warming. The project was founded by Laurie David, wife of comedian Larry David, as a nonpolitical effort to unite people around the issue of global warming. The march will move across the United States, spreading information via the Internet, and culminate in the capital on Earth Day 2006. (appeared in the Winter 2006 issue) • Amber Jewison received her R.N. in May and is working at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital in pediatrics. (appeared in the Winter 2006 issue) • Nazima Kathiria was awarded a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in June. She is now doing an internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. (appeared in the Winter 2006 issue) • Emilio Bruna, Ph.D., received the 2005 International Educator of the Year Award from the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he is an assistant professor of wildlife ecology and conservation. His past awards include a 2002 John Harper Young Investigator’s Prize from the British Ecological Society and recognition in 2003 as a Diversity Scholar by the American Institute for Biological Studies. (appeared in the Spring 2006 issue) • Lamar Heystek, M.A. ’05, a lecturer in linguistics at UC Davis, is a candidate for Davis City Council. Heystek, who ran unsuccessfully two years ago, is a member of the city’s Open Space and Recreation and Parks commissions. The election will be held in June. (appeared in the Spring 2006 issue) • John Mitchel recently graduated on the Commandant’s List from the Army Logistical Management College’s Combined Logistics Captains Career Course at Fort Lee, Va. Mitchel was also named a Superior Logistician by the cadre. He is currently serving as the supply operations officer for the Army Field Support Battalion in Kuwait, where he manages supply transactions. (appeared in the Spring 2006 issue) |
