2001Raquel Silva, J.D. ’05, opened a family law and estate-planning practice in Davis. She and her husband, Andrew Riffel, a Ph.D. student at UC Davis, are expecting a baby in June. (appeared in the Spring 2006 issue) • Jonathan Eastman graduated in May from Pennsylvania State College School of Medicine and will begin a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. (appeared in the Summer 2006 issue) • Abby Taylor is the executive director of Ag Against Hunger, a nonprofit organization based in Salinas that procures surplus produce from growers in San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties and gives it to food banks throughout the state and then to other states. She will also be married in July in San Juan Bautista to fiancé Paul Silva. (appeared in the Summer 2006 issue) • Diana (Sillman) Taylor and her husband, Ross, welcomed their first child, daughter Madison Jean, in April. The family lives in Santa Cruz. (appeared in the Summer 2006 issue) • In the past year, sisters Amy Denney Zuniga and Robin Denney ’04 have dedicated themselves to worldwide public service. Zuniga is an Episcopal priest and Fulbright scholar serving in El Salvador. Denney spent six weeks helping after Hurricane Katrina and now heads to Liberia this summer to spend a year teaching courses in agriculture. Also this summer, a group of UC Davis students will visit Zuniga for a service project in El Salvador. Zuniga’s blog can be found at www.updatesfromelsalvador.blogspot.com. (appeared in the Summer 2006 issue) • Tea Austin studied in Florence, Italy, in a summer exchange law school program sponsored by Gonzaga University. On graduating, he plans to join a law firm in Newport Beach. (appeared in the Fall 2006 issue) • Abbigail Black married Kevin Standish ’01, M.S. ’03, in Walnut Creek in June. The wedding party included bridesmaid Sarah Nisbet ’99, Cred. ’01, and Ian Striegler ’00. The couple lives in Greenville, S.C., where Standish is an engineer for General Electric Wind Energy Division, and Black is a commercial property manager for Liberty Property Trust. (appeared in the Fall 2006 issue) • Kathleen DuVal, Ph.D., a history teacher at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has written The Native Ground: Indians and Colonists in the Heart of the Continent (University of Pennsylvania Press). In the book, DuVal retells the story of Indian and European contact, arguing that it was the Indians who more often determined the relations between the two groups. (appeared in the Fall 2006 issue) • At press time, Philip Ryan and Rian Hopkins ’02 planned to get married in September in Cambria. Hopkins received a doctorate in physical therapy from Arcadia University in 2005 and now works at the Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland in Rockville. Ryan is pursuing a Ph.D. in genetics at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and works at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. (appeared in the Fall 2006 issue) • Shawna Ryan, M.A., is the 2006 winner of the Maurice Prize in Fiction from UC Davis, which annually awards a $5,000 prize to the best unpublished manuscript by a graduate of the creative writing program. She received the award for her manuscript Locke 1928. (appeared in the Fall 2006 issue) • Andrea Tacdol and Benjamin Ibarra ’02 at press time were planning a September marriage with an on-campus reception. The couple met as undergraduates when they worked as peer advising counselors for the Educational Opportunity Program. Tacdol works for the city of Oakland as coordinator for the Youth Advisory Commission. Ibarra is a caseworker for Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. They will make their home in Oakland. (appeared in the Fall 2006 issue) • Melissa Borrelli, J.D. ’05, passed the California Bar Exam this year and is working as special assistant to the president at California State University, Stanislaus. She and her husband, Scott, and son, Matthew, 4, live in Waterford. (appeared in the Winter 2007 issue) • Sara Oliver married Andrew Gordus in August in Oakhurst. A number of their UC Davis classmates were in attendance, including bridesmaids Sarah Schwartz ’00, Angie Gould ’02 and Margarita Gordus ’03; groomsmen Kevin Calia ’00 and Ryan Kerbow ’01; and guests Greg Hersch ’01, Carolyn Phillips ’01, Greg Novotny ’01, Katie (Foster) Stapko ’02, Tim Stapko ’01, M.S. ’03, Nathaneal Cauchi ’01, Valerie Cullen ’01, Brennen Reynolds ’01, M.S. ’02, Carly (Gross) Reynolds ’01, Paul Hunt ’03 and David Giles ’01. The couple honeymooned in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They currently live in Somerville, Mass., where Oliver works in publishing at Addison-Wesley, and Gordus is completing his Ph.D. in biophysics at Harvard University. (appeared in the Winter 2007 issue) • Michael Irwin graduated from California State University, Sacramento, with his M.B.A. in May and has worked at Genentech in Vacaville since 2001. Irwin’s wife, Kristin (Franklin) Irwin ’01, is an elementary school teacher. The two live in Sacramento with their 1-year-old daughter, Karin. (appeared in the Summer 2007 issue) • Miriam Nuñez received her master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix in February. (appeared in the Summer 2007 issue) • Alan Rich and his wife Nicole (Murrisky) Rich ’02, welcomed their second child, Clare Rose, in April. The coupled recently moved to Elk Grove. Alan completed his master’s degree in nursing in May, and Nicole is an at-home mom. (appeared in the Fall 2007 issue) • Laura Scott, account supervisor with Sacramento public relations firm Runyon Saltzman & Einhorn Inc., and Chris Radley, M.B.A. ’06, were married in Stockton in October 2006. Stacy Schwartz ’01 and Nina (Quaccia) Brunetti ’99 were bridesmaids. The couple lives in El Dorado Hills. (appeared in the Fall 2007 issue) • Anthony Eggert, M.S., was appointed adviser for science and technology policy for the California Air Resources Board. He had served as an adviser on energy policy to the Office of Federal Governmental Relations for the UC Office of the President and was previously an associate research director for the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. (appeared in the Winter 2008 issue) • Robert Arosteguy and Katie (O’Donnell) Arosteguy welcomed their first baby, Carsen James, in November. Robert teaches middle-school social studies, and Katie is finishing her Ph.D. in American literature at Washington State University. The family currently lives in Washington but plans to return to the Sacramento area. (appeared in the Spring 2008 issue) • Alonzo Garcia and Irma Erika (Nevarez) Garcia welcomed their first baby, Jazmin Erika, in March. Alonzo is a senior component design engineer at Intel Corp., and Irma is a consultant manager at Accenture. The family currently lives in West Sacramento.
