1975Michael Norman, M.S., Ph.D. ’80, UC San Diego computational astrophysicist, has been appointed interim director of the university’s San Diego Supercomputer Center. He became senior fellow at the center in 2000 and its chief scientific officer in June 2008. Norman is a fellow of both the American Physical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a past recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize from Germany, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Sidney Fernbach Award and other honors.   Jim Stimson was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle, an honor for individuals who have made significant contributions to Northern California TV for 25 years or more. Stimson, who began his broadcasting career at KDVS, is assistant news director at KCRA-TV in Sacramento.
1977Derrick Bang recently wrote the book Security Blankets: How “Peanuts” Touched our Lives (Andrews McMeel). Bang is the Davis Enterprise arts and entertainment editor.    David Katz is now the full-time program director of the Young Einsteins Society! Teen Tutors Group of San Mateo. The group tutors elementary to middle school students.   Gary Novack, Ph.D., has been selected president of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, a two-year volunteer position. He is also president of PharmaLogic Development Inc. in San Rafael.
1978Philip Risken recently became vice president of national network operations for Cricket Communications in San Diego, commuting from Walnut Creek. His wife, Jennifer Tim Risken ’80, is an elementary school teacher in the Mount Diablo School District, and their son, Jacob, is a junior majoring in civil engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
1980Jim Guida graduated with a Master in the Arts of Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary.    Calvin Mclean previously attended Ohio State University’s graduate communications and journalism program and graduate education programs in Oklahoma. He now lives in Albuquerque, N.M.    M.D. (Mo) Salman, M.P.V.M., Ph.D. ’83, was given an Alumni Achievement Award from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in June for his global contributions to animal population health and veterinary epidemiology. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, a fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and a professor of clinical sciences and environmental and radiological health sciences at Colorado State University.
1981Theresa Gibney recently retired as program manager and technology strategist for Hewlett-Packard’s ink supplies business after working various levels of engineering and management for 26 years. She is currently a senior utility analyst with the Public Utility Commission in Salem, Ore.
1982Douglas Mader, M.S., D.V.M. ’86, recieved an Alumni Achievement Award from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in June for his contributions to the welfare of animals as a researcher, author, teacher and practitioner. An expert in herpetological medicine and surgery, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Mader owns and directs the Marathon Veterinary Hospital in Marathon Key, Fla., which serves the Country Zoo, Key West Aquarium, the Dolphin Research Center and Theater of the Sea.
1983James Nolan wrote Legal Accents, Legal Borrowing: The International Problem-Solving Court Movement (Princeton University), examining the global spread of a new breed of courts that attempt to solve offenders’ problems. Nolan is a sociology professor at Williams College in Massachusetts.
1984David Jessup, M.P.V.M, a research associate for the Institute for Marine Science at UC Santa Cruz and the Wildlife Health Center at UC Davis, received an Alumni Achievement Award from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for contributions to wildlife and conservation medicine. He is a senior wildlife veterinarian for the California Department of Fish and Game’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response and one of the founders of modern free-ranging wildlife medicine in North America.    Dave Roche and his wife, Nancy, own the landscape architect firm Roche+Roche, which was featured in the summer edition of California Home + Design as one of California’s 10 landscape firms to watch. In conjunction with GouldEvansBaumThornley Architects, Roche+Roche also won the PCBC Gold Nugget Award for Outstanding Adaptive Re-use for their Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley project.
1985Nancy Morse recently became the first woman president of the Northern California chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, where women total less than 2 percent of the membership. During her 21 years in commercial real estate, she has been twice nominated for the Office Broker of the Year Award by the Association of Silicon Valley Brokers, and in 2006, she was recognized by the San Jose Business Journal as one of the top three brokers in the Silicon Valley. She works for Grubb & Ellis Co. in San Jose.    Chris Wilson retired from the U.S. Army in June after 24 years of service. He has served in places like Korea as a platoon leader and, after getting a medical degree and completing an orthopedic surgery residency, Afghanistan as a general orthopedist. He spent the last three at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he cared for service members who were severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wilson recently joined the Hand Surgery Associates in Sacramento. He and his wife, Teresa (Thompson) Wilson ’86, have a son, Michael, and live in Folsom.
1987James Tipton, Ph.D., wrote Annette Vallon: A Novel of the French Revolution (HarperCollins), depicting William Wordsworth’s mistress and muse. The novel was a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller and a Barnes and Noble Discover Pick. Tipton teaches English and creative writing at College of Marin.
1991Jennifer Lee Zeka died unexpectedly in Woodland in August. She was 40. A native of Davis, she had worked in client support services at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s large animal clinic for 14 years. She is survived by her father, Timothy Zeka.
1992Tracie Olson became Yolo County’s new public defender in June. She has worked for the office since 1998, most recently as chief deputy public defender.
1993Grant Guilford, Ph.D., became dean of science at the University of Auckland this past August. He previously directed the Institute of Natural Sciences at Massey University in New Zealand after directing the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences. During his tenure at Massey, the veterinary school became the first in the Southern Hemisphere to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
