1981Bruce Chan, J.D., was appointed a San Francisco County Superior Court judge by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in January. Chan had served as a commissioner for the San Francisco County Superior Court since 2004 and before that as chief counsel for the California State Assembly Committee on Public Safety.
1982Sara Spivey was named chief marketing officer at Convio Inc.—an Austin, Texas, company that provides on-demand constituent relationship management software and services to nonprofit organizations. She has been working in the field of marketing for more than 20 years.    Howard Stone was elected into the National Academy of Engineering, the highest professional distinction given to engineers, for his study and development of fundamental concepts and applications in microfluidics. He is the Vicky Joseph professor of Engineering and applied mathematics at Harvard University, where he started in 1989. In September, he will begin an appointment as Donald R. Dixon and Elizabeth W. Dixon professor in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University.
1983Felice Farran started Litter Free Lunch (www.litterfreelunch.com), a company in Naperville, Ill., that sells cloth napkins to help families reduce the amount of waste created from children’s lunches.    Michael Spears was recently selected as the deputy commanding officer for the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, Korea. Spears is currently assigned in the Headquarters, Department of the Army, Office of the Chief, Army Reserve as the Chief, Force Integration Division. He will assume his new post in June.
1984Diane Mason and Daniel Rockey ’91 joined Bullivant Houser Bailey PC, a business and complex litigation law firm in San Francisco. Mason is part of the intellectual property practice group where she helps clients with trademark procurement and protection, unfair competition and Internet issues. She formerly worked as an intellectual property attorney with Morgan Lewis & Bockius. Rockey focuses on technology, securities, unfair business practices, intellectual property and antitrust litigation. He was formerly special counsel with Heller Ehrman LLP’s Menlo Park office.
1985Francisco Rodriguez, M.S. ’97, is the new president of MiraCosta College in north San Diego County. He has worked 24 years in higher education, including his most recent position as president of Cosumnes River College in Sacramento.    Bruce Frohnen, M.A., recently edited the book Rethinking Rights (University of Missouri Press), which reassesses human rights for a multicultural world. Frohnen is editor of the Political Science Reviewer and a senior fellow at the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal.    Mary Rock is the science laboratory coordinator at the new biological and heath sciences facility at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg. She lives in Antioch.    Jonathan Zehr, Ph.D., a professor of ocean sciences at UC Santa Cruz, was recently elected a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology.
1986Thomas Bachand recently had a book of his landscape photography, Lake Tahoe: A Fragile Beauty, published by Chronicle Books. The book includes an introduction by Charles Goldman, professor and director of UC Davis’ Tahoe Research Group.    Andrew “Hoang” Do was elected to the Garden Grove City Council in November. He also serves as chief of staff for Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen. He has been a senior litigator for the law firm of BriggsAlexnder in Anaheim since 2007. Do is a former resident of Beckett One Dormitory and can be contacted at Andrew.Do@ocgob.com  A book by Stacie Strong, Research and Practice in International Commercial Arbitration: Sources and Strategies, was recently published by Oxford University Press. She also wrote an article on international class arbitration for the University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law. When not writing or teaching international dispute resolution at the University of Missouri Law School, Strong performs in the mid-Missouri area with her jazz band, Tappuccino, which features her tap dancing as a core musical element.
1988Sherill (Hoy) Atkins is working in software management in Newport Beach. She shares her life with Robert, a software engineer with a music background. She is studying cello and attends the symphony regularly. She enjoys traveling to Europe, particularly Britain. She welcomes hearing from old friends. Sherry Fields, M.A. ’92, Ph.D. ’03, wrote the book Pestilence and Headcolds: Encountering Illness in Colonial Mexico (Columbia University Press), about heath beliefs in Mexico after the arrival of the Spanish. Fields works as a history lecturer at UC Davis.
1989John Little was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and conduct research through July at Bayan College in Muscat, Oman. His course is called “Media Convergence and Global Viewership: Mediating Truth Claims Across Cultures.” He also plans to produce a film about native Omani boat craftsmen. He is an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and has helped produce science short documentaries for the Science Channel and Discovery Channel.
1990John Berger, Ph.D., recently had his book, Forests Forever: Their Ecology, Restoration, and Protection, published by Forests Forever Foundation and the Center for American Places. The book updates his sold-out 1998 book, Understanding Forests (Sierra Club Books).    Ramon Guerrero, M.D., is a practicing anesthesiologist in Plano, Texas. He and his wife, Sandra, also own a small organic vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County. Meadowlark Vineyards (meadowlarkvineyards.com) completed its third bottling this season. In addition, he has created a company, Intrasafe Medical Inc., to market a medical device on which he holds a patent.    April Halliday, D.V.M., took up the sport of Spec Miata road racing. Since earning her license to compete nationally, she has finished every race she’s competed in and started placing in finishing positions during the season. She’s coaching for the Hooked on Driving organization in Willows, teaching people how to race cars. She is a practicing veterinarian in Sacramento.    Cindy (Smith) Nelson, after 15 years as an interior designer, is now co-leader of the Davis chapter of Quilts for Kids, Inc., an organization that makes quilts for ill and injured children. Beginning this academic year, the group joined UC Davis Human Corps quarterly Weekend of Service project. In November, Nelson helped students sew 27 quilt tops and 35 fabric dolls in eight hours.    Vida Vreca-Ponnequin graduated with a 4.0 GPA with a B.S. in nursing and a minor in psychology from California State University, Sacramento, in December. Last May, she was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society and presented with award for extraordinary scholastic performance and leadership. She lives with her husband, Craig, in the Sacramento area.
