1988Athena Chiladakis of Oakland was recently engaged to Thomas Stewart, a cattle rancher and hay grower. She is an associate director of regulatory affairs at Bayer HealthCare LLC and has been internationally recognized as a leading expert in the area of electronic regulatory submissions and electronic document management systems. She also rides horses competitively, teaches part time in the Bay Area, snow-camps with the Sierra Club and takes photos as an amateur photographer.    David Goldstein was recently named an "Environmental Hero" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for his weekly newspaper column and for his role as the coordinator of the Ventura County Recycling Market Development Zone. He developed programs resulting in the recycling of over 8,000 tons of agricultural film plastic per year.
1989Sumbul Ali-Karamali, J.D., recently wrote The Muslim Next Door: The Qur'an, the Media, and That Veil Thing (White Cloud Press), which contains stories about growing up Muslim and female that are designed to counter misinformation about Islam and Muslims. After graduating from UC Davis, she earned her LL.M. in Islamic law from the University of London and was a research associate at the Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law in London.   Marc Roach passed away in February 2008 in San Ramon at the age of 43. Mr. Roach's UC Davis studies took him to places such as Hawaii, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, but he later worked in the computer technology field and was most recently employed as a contractor for Computer Sciences Corp. at Washington Mutual in Pleasanton. He pursued his love of nature as an avid hiker throughout the United States and around the world, trekking in New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti and Costa Rica. Mr. Roach is survived by his father, LeRoy, his mother, Erma, and his brother, Michael.
1990Ruth Fankushen Kunkel, the original owner of the Delta of Venus CafĂ© in Davis, recently wrote a children's cookbook with her 9-year-old son, Gabriel Kunkel, An Alien Robot's Cookbook (CreateSpace). The book emphasizes the use of locally grown produce and organic ingredients. Her son provided most of the artwork for the cookbook. Ruth lives in Davis with her two sons and husband, Roger Kunkel.   Michele (Justin) Pielsticker, J.D. '96, and David Kline '90 were instrumental in updating the second edition of California's Tax Machine: A History of Taxing and Spending in the Golden State (California Taxpayers' Association). Pielsticker is the association's vice president and general counsel, and Kline is the taxpayer association's director of communications.   Lucy Spelman, D.V.M., is editor of The Rhino with Glue-on Shoes (Bantam Dell), about the world of exotic animals and the doctors who care for them. She is currently in Rwanda as the field manager of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, a group that provides veterinary care to animals in their own habitats.
1991John Brosio's artwork is on exhibit until Jan. 19 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. His paintings of tornadoes explore the relationship between humans and nature in the 21st century.    Steve Lev, Res., died in June 2008 of pancreatic cancer. After finishing his anesthesia residency, Dr. Lev practiced in Bozeman, Mont., until September 2006 when the cancer was diagnosed and he retired. Survivors include his wife, Annie, his two children, Kevin and Sarah, and his two stepchildren, Will and Elizabeth Brewster.
1992Jennifer Barber has been appointed the director of alumni relations at California State University, Sacramento. She has 14 years of experience in alumni relations, including serving as interim assistant vice chancellor of Alumni Relations at UC Davis and interim executive director of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association in 2005-07.   Yvette Bettati, M.B.A. '02, was chosen as one of the top 40 outstanding financial executives in America under the age of 40 by Treasury & Risk magazine. She is currently the director of risk management at Vulcan Inc. in Seattle.
1993Donald Anderson, M.A. '95, recently wrote Organization Development (Sage). He works at Sun Microsystems as an organization development consultant and teaches at the University of Denver.
1994Lora (Dietz) Kaiser and Herman Kaiser welcomed their son, Davis, last March. Herman owns a precision manufacturing services company, and Lora runs her own landscape design firm. They live in Folsom.
1996David Chao, a regional manager at Cisco-WebEx, won the Stevie Award for "Best Sales Representative of 2008" from American Business Awards. Chao ranks in the top 1 percent of worldwide corporate sales for Cisco-WebEx and is the top producer in the Rancho Cordova office. He was also recently promoted to manager of North America and Canada sales.
1997Jeremy Greenberg has written Relative Discomfort: The Family Survival Guide (Andrews McMeel), a humorous how-to for handling family get-togethers. A writer and comic, Greenberg is also a contributor to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Jokes (Alpha/Penguin) and lives in Seattle with his wife and twin sons.   Lauren Christina Poon, of Castro Valley, died in August 2008 at age 33 from a brain aneurysm. Dr. Poon received her M.D. degree from New York Medical College and became an anesthesiologist at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Devoted to medicine and serving others, Dr. Poon loved travel, tennis and good friends. Survivors include her parents, Millie Gee and Larry Poon; her brother, Stephen Poon; her sister, Alicia Poon '00, and brother-in-law, Keenan Wong '00; her grandparents and her companion, Robert Hill.
1998Brandon Reeves joined the law firm Ellis, Coleman, Poirier, La Voie & Steinheimer in Sacramento as an associate attorney. He previously practiced as a litigation associate at Greene, Chauvel, Descalso & Minoletti in San Mateo.
1999Anne (Rice) Davis and Andrew Davis '03 welcomed their first daughter, Abigail Ann Davis, in October 2007.
2000Alexander Chan founded BullPad.com, an Internet site that allows users to directly communicate with one another anonymously. Chan says the idea for the start-up originated partly in an M.B.A. marketing class at St. Mary's College.   Tracy Finlayson won the 2008 Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award for young professionals during the American Public Health Association's annual meeting. She was honored for her research on oral health disparities among black children in Detroit, which she has written about in public health dental journals. Finlayson is currently an assistant professor in the Division of Health Services Administration at San Diego State University's Graduate School of Public Health.
