| 2004Zeb Hogan, Ph.D., an assistant research professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, and host of National Geographic’s Monster Fish, received the Young Alumnus Award at the Cal Aggie Alumni Awards Gala in February. As a graduate student, Hogan developed the Megafishes Project, which works to conserve the largest freshwater fish in the world. Now as director of the project, he works with nearly 100 scientists in more than a dozen countries with expeditions to study the most diverse freshwater systems in the world. In 2004, he was named a National Geographic Emerging Explorer. He lives in Reno, Nev. |
| 2005Chris and Hana (Fujimoto) Camarillo moved to Portland, Ore., after graduation and married in 2007. Chris graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2008, and is now an associate attorney focusing on estate planning, family law and civil litigation at a Portland law firm. Hana is a student at Pacific University School of Pharmacy in Hillsboro, Ore., class of 2013. • Kyle Bryant works for Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, where he founded the Ride Ataxia cycling program to raise money for research on the life-shortening neuromuscular disorder. Bryant, who was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia when he was 17, has completed a number of long-distance rides on a recumbent tricycle. Over the past four years, he and three other Team FARA members have biked a total of more than 6,500 miles and raised nearly $1 million for research grants. One of those grants went to School of Veterinary Medicine molecular biosciences professor Gino Cortopassi. “I could not be more proud, because Gino was the one who first inspired me to make a difference with this disease,” says Bryant, who previously worked for a Sacramento engineering firm. In May, Bryant and his team will be biking through Davis. Other Ride Ataxia events will be held this year in Dallas, Philadelphia and Orlando, Fla. |

| 2010Ramses Alvarez is a television news reporter in Medford, Ore., at the CBS affiliate KTVL. • Jonathan Bay is volunteering at Hopewell Inn, a nonprofit therapeutic farm and residency in Ohio for adults with severe mental illnesses. His assignment was arranged by Church of the Brethren’s volunteer service program following a three-week orientation in Oregon, which focused on service, nonviolence, peacemaking and simple living. • Elena Shapiro, M.A., recently wrote 13, rue Thérèse (Reagan Author Books), a novel about an American scholar who discovers a box of letters, photos and other artifacts, and his search to learn more about the French woman who once owned them. In February, Shapiro stopped by UC Davis to discuss her new book at an event in the bookstore. |
