Goodbye to Mom Marion
Marion Franck
We say goodbye to Marion Franck with this issue of UC Davis Magazine. For five years she has shared her insights as a mother of college students in the magazine’s “Parents” section and in the campus’s Aggie Family Pack newsletter and Web site, but her youngest son graduated from college this spring, so she, too, is graduating from her mom-related writing duties. “I have to write from experience,” she says.
Indeed, she has. She has written almost 80 articles and columns for the monthly newsletter and the magazine. Subjects have ranged from the cost of textbooks to the appropriate involvement of parents during the college years and from roommate issues to communication. She dived into topics with unbounded curiosity and enthusiasm, and said she had the most fun when she consulted with her own children. She’s fond of students and often gathered a dozen or so together to interview them as a group.
Through the years, dozens of parents have written in to thank her for addressing a topic that resonated with them or for writing with the understanding and warmth that let them know they weren’t alone.
Marion will continue to share her life experiences and insight in a column she writes for The Davis Enterprise. But now she’ll have more time for her volunteer work with Yolo Hospice and to ride the rapids — however gentle — in her whitewater kayak. “I’ll have more time to go out and float around,” she says. We wish her all the best and happy floating!
