Boxing

Long before “California Kid” Urijah Faber ’03 entered the professional cagefighting world, UC Davis produced martial arts champions of another kind—boxers. Boxing was one of the most popular sports on campus up through the 1930s, when UC Davis defeated teams from UC Berkeley and Stanford University and twice won the Pacific Intercollegiate Championship. Crip Toomey, coach from 1932 to 1960, also served on the NCAA Boxing Rules Committee. At least two Aggie boxers, including Al Gomez ’30, left, went on to professional careers. But by the 1950s, interest died and the campus stopped fielding a team.
