The Second Century

Model: Shields Plaza

Shields Plaza

A new plaza at the west entrance of Shields Library will emphasize the library’s role as the academic heart of the campus and will continue the open space from the Memorial Union, along the Quad, to Mrak Hall and beyond to the new south entryway at the Mondavi Center and Mondavi Institute. The open space will extend to the west as well, as the current four-decade-old “Temporary Buildings” are replaced by a new “urban walking street” along storefront-type facilities for student life and student services. This project begins with the removal of the Temporary Buildings, which is scheduled to begin in early 2010, followed by the groundbreaking for the Student Community Center.
