Military: Other defense research

The Department of Defense annually funds about $20 million worth of research at UC Davis. Here are a few more examples:

  • The UC Davis California Lighting Technology Center is working with the U.S. Navy to reduce energy use for lighting in buildings, ships and vehicles. UC Davis will also advise the Navy on heating, cooling and vehicle fuel efficiencies.
  • Creating secure mobile communication networks is the aim of a large U.S. Army-funded project. Prasant Mohapatra, professor and chair of computer science, leads a research team that also includes Penn State University.
  • Saif Islam, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency grants to work on semiconductor-based sensors that could be made into a new generation of digital cameras.
  • Mathematicians James Bremer and Naoki Saito have a grant from the Office of Naval Research on "computational harmonic analysis," while Fu Liu, assistant professor of mathematics, has a grant from the National Security Agency on "enumerative combinatorics," a branch of math that deals with counting structures.
  • Francisco Samaniego, distinguished professor of statistics, has received U.S. Army Research Office funding since 1999 for studies on the interface of statistics and engineering. His work includes modeling of system performance, optimization relative to cost/performance measures and comparative analysis of communication networks and statistical inference from failure-time data.
