'80Grace Don-Wheeler received her doctoral degree in biology from UCLA in June. Paul Steinberg graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1983 and passed the bar exam the same year. He is now an airline pilot for American Airlines, based in San Francisco.

'82 Karin Akerfeldt, M.S., an assistant professor of chemistry at Rutgers University's Camden campus, has been awarded a $33,000 Cottrell College Science Award from the Research Corp. The grant will allow Akerfeldt to take a Rutgers-Camden student with her to the University of Lund, Sweden, to participate in her bio-organic chemistry research. Akerfeldt received her doctoral degree in chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1989 and joined the Rutgers faculty in 1993. She lives with her husband, Michael, in Montchanin, Del. Steven A. Anderson recently joined The CAC Group, a commercial real estate firm, as vice president, specializing in commercial office building sales and leasing projects. Anderson and his wife, Nadine, had their first child, Emily Tate, in June. They live in Mill Valley. Christy Corzine, M.S., an environmental training instructor, has been named a principal of Jones & Stokes Associates, a West Coast environmental consulting firm. Corzine specializes in environmental, infrastructure and land-use planning.

'83 Lonnie Barish, M.Ad. '87, was recently promoted to sales manager at Advantage Technical Services, a division of Accustaff. Barish also has a new son, born in July. They live in Pleasanton. John Benson has joined U.S. Bank Corp. as a vice president and senior relationship manager in the commercial real estate division in the Bay Area. Previously, Benson worked six years for Bank of America in San Francisco. He lives in Berkeley, where he is restoring a 1911 Julia Morgan apartment building. Linda Somers, J.D. '86, participated in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta (see UC Davis Magazine, summer '96, page 43), finishing 31st in the women's marathon. Somers completed the 26-mile event in 2:36.58.

'84 Patricia G. Corral completed her master's degree in Southwest studies and anthropology at New Mexico Highlands University while building her solar-powered adobe home. Corral will continue her career with the U.S. Forest Service as district archeologist and American Indian liaison. She and Jerry Cornwell recently married. George Griffin was recently appointed principal of Winters Joint Union High School. Mary Paliescheskey, a research coordinator with the Department of Family Practice at UC Davis Medical Center, recently completed training as a birth attendant and has opened Mothering the Mother, a labor support/postpartum care service in Davis. Kristin (Mabry) Tranquada has taken a new job as director of communications for Whittier College. She lives in Pasadena. Mary Yaeger, M.F.A. '96, took part in a three-woman exhibition at the Solomon Dubnick Gallery in Sacramento titled Introductions '96. Yaeger's exhibit included a selection of patches inspired by Girl Scouts of America merit badges. Yaeger was awarded the 1996 Ellen Hansen Memorial Prize at UC Davis this past spring for her work.

'85 Lisa M. Jacobsen was recently named a partner in the Beverly Hills law firm of Rosenfeld, Meyer & Susman, LLP. Jacobsen specializes in labor and employment law, defending employers against claims of wrongful termination. Bob McBarton was recently promoted to sales executive with American Express, working in the merchant acquisition group. McBarton has held several positions with the company since 1990. He and his wife, Felicia, live in Antioch with their four cats and two dogs. Susan Peisker writes that when she's not caring for her three children or planning church events, she pursues her "latent career," writing. Gregory Sneep has been appointed medical director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Edgewater Medical Center in Chicago. Sneep received his M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica in 1990.

'86 Jack Bair was recently promoted to vice president and general counsel for the San Francisco Giants baseball team; he had served as the Giants' director of legal and governmental affairs since 1993. Bair played a key role in the team's negotiations to build a new ballpark in downtown San Francisco, a ballot measure that passed earlier this year. Before joining the Giants' organization, Bair worked as a deputy city attorney for the city and county of San Francisco, where he directed the 1992 legal effort to prevent the sale and relocation of the Giants. Bair is currently secretary of the Giants Community Fund and a member of the board of directors of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association and Legal Services for Children. Robert Cameron Bolt, chief executive officer of Wallop Software, a Foster City-based Web software company, was profiled in July in the San Francisco Chronicle. Karen Brosius has been appointed director of corporate contributions for Philip Morris Companies Inc. in New York. Lawrence Brown, J.D. '89, has been appointed executive director of the California District Attorneys Association. He and April Graham were married in January. Cynthia Devereux recently spent a year in Poland as a member of the M.B.A. Enterprise Corps, working for a Polish food company. Devereux went abroad after completing her M.B.A. at UC Berkeley. David H.C. King, M.D. '90, finished his urology residency at the University of Texas at San Antonio in June. He is the staff urologist at the U.S. Air Force Academy. King lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and three daughters. Gregory E. Sutter, M.S., a resource ecologist, was recently named a principal of Jones & Stokes Associates, a West Coast environmental consulting firm. During his nine years with the company, Sutter has focused on wildland revegetation, habitat restoration and integrated flood control projects. He serves on the firm's executive committee, as well as on the city of Galt's planning commission.

'87 Sandra Bracka O'Brien and Daniel O'Brien '88 had their first child, Brendan Harris, in April. Bracka O'Brien is an English-as-second-language instructor in Davis and Sacramento, and O'Brien works for a computer firm in Sacramento. Brendan's aunts Bettina Bracka Halvorsen '85 and Jean O'Brien Magarian '84 and uncle Toby Magarian '84 are also Davis alumni. U.S. Air Force Capt. Dale S. Bruner graduated from Georgetown University in May with a master's degree in national security studies. This summer, Bruner completed a three-year tour with the Defense Mapping Agency. He has now been assigned to Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Larry Nutting completed his residency in pediatrics at UC Irvine in June. Nutting now has a position with Hershey Medical Group in Salinas. He and his wife, Jeanine, have one daughter, Alysia.

Jesikah Maria Ross, a community television producer and activist, was honored with four awards for outstanding achievement in community media and community service in May. Ross received the Ripp King Memorial Award, a Bay Area Cable Excellence Award, for her dedication to public access in programming. She received a 1995­1996 Community Service Award from the UC Davis Human Corps and a Pro Femina Research Consortium Graduate Travel Award. In addition she received UC Davis' sixth annual Affirmative Action and Diversity Achievement Award. Ross worked for five years with Davis Community Television and currently serves as a consultant, speaker and editor for a variety of media-related projects. She is also a graduate student in the UC Davis human and community development department. Scot Sandstrom has been named director of development at Brehm Communities in San Diego. With his church, Sandstrom is also helping build a daycare facility in Tecate, Mexico, for underprivileged families. He and his wife, Kim (Villa) Sandstrom '88, recently had a baby--their third daughter. JoAnn M. Sekiguchi, a Frank Lappin Horsfall Jr. Fellow conducting biomedical research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, received her doctoral degree in molecular biology from Cornell University in May and joined the postdoctoral research faculty at the MSK Cancer Center. During her time at Cornell, Sekiguchi published nine research papers in the Journal of Biochemistry. Sandra Uyemura Strong received a 1996 Woman Business Owner of the Year Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners, Salt Lake chapter. Strong, of Strong Financial Consulting, holds a chartered financial consultant designation and is a chartered life underwriter with certification in pensions and executive compensation.

'88 Lauri Grasse, M.S., D.V.M. '89, is practicing small animal medicine in Oakland. In March, she married Jeffrey Gill, an accessibility specialist with Max-Ability Inc. Timothy M. Harris, M.A. '91, graduated from the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento in May. While attending McGeorge, Harris was a Best Brief finalist in the National Moot Court Competition, was named to the Traynor Honor Society and received the American Jurisprudence Award in Jurisprudence. In addition, Harris served as the vice president of the business law forum, was on the moot court honors board and was chief articles editor for McGeorge's Pacific Law Journal. Tracie D. Harvey has completed a four-year psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine, serving one year as chief resident. A child and adolescent psychiatry fellow at the Yale Child Study Center, Harvey received her M.D. from the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in 1992. Carolyn Kerby received her master's degree in physical therapy from Duke University in May. She lives in Austin, Texas, and works at St. David's Rehabilitation Center. Donna Marmorstein has been hired as a copy editor for the Aberdeen American News in South Dakota. For several years before joining the newspaper, Marmorstein had tutored students in the writing center at Northwestern State University. Alicia Ritter has been named a partner at Deen & Black Public Relations in Sacramento. A four-year employee of the firm, she will manage a number of major accounts and conduct new business development activities. Ritter lives in Davis. David Sereni Jr. has completed a master's degree in physical therapy at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland. He and Lisa Panella recently married, and he writes that they are looking for a home in Santa Rosa. Sigrid Wynne-Evans, a Cal-OSHA inspector, has launched The Beaded Bear, a part-time beadwork business she runs out of her home in Los Gatos. Wynne-Evans has also written five books on beading and teaches beading classes in the Bay Area.

'89 Jennifer Dow has been named chief resident in emergency medicine for the York Hospital with the Penn State Hershey Emergency Medicine Residency program. Dow received her M.D. degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1994. Matthew Nadeau, a production manager in semiconductor fabrication at NEC Electronics, recently bought a house in Roseville. Nadeau and his wife, Shari, have a 1-year-old son, Andrew. John W. Vineyard, J.D., has been made a partner in the Riverside law firm of Thomas, Mort & Prosser. He practices business, commercial, environmental and toxic tort litigation. Vineyard is secretary of the Riverside County Bar Association, as well as editor of the association's periodical, Riverside County Lawyer. Dana Nicole Williams was recently named director of publishing for Major League Baseball Properties in New York City.
