Updated Ollie

I read with interest the News & Notes article on the UC Davis mascot in the summer 1997 issue. My involvement with the Aggie band and the Cal Aggie alumni band dates back to 1971, so I've had plenty of "hands on" experience with Aggie spirit and Aggie mascots.

I believe the problem isn't with the UCD mascot, but rather how that mustang mascot is presented and perceived. Many universities are quite comfortable having both a nickname and a different mascot: the North Carolina Tarheels (mascot, the ram), Georgetown Hoyas (bulldog), Texas A&M Aggies (collie), Navy Middies (goat). Let's don't toss out tradition. Let's tinker with it a little.

I created a cartoon character of Ollie, the UCD mascot, which appeared in the "Instant Replay" football program from 1980 through 1988. These cartoons showed Ollie "doing something" to the mascot of the opposing school.

Let's keep the horse as the university mascot, but drop the serious pretentiousness of a mustang. I can't accept a scarecrow as a school mascot, but I'd be willing to offer up my interpretation of Ollie the Horse as an alternative.

Ollie forever

I can't believe a mere 2,250 UCD students (75 percent of 3,000) gave the boot to ol' Ollie ("Students Say 'Neigh' to Mustang," summer 1997).

Why weren't the alumni given a chance to vote on this?

Traditions are meant to be kept--not discarded by a bunch of "Johnnies-come-lately"!

May Ollie live forever!
