Ventures in new territory

Maze illustration Great article in the [winter 2000] issue about funding campus research ["Venturing into New Territory"].

If anyone is truly concerned about where the money is coming from, they should consider quitting the clamor to cut spending and taxes at all levels of government. Whether funding comes from the NSF, any other tax-supported granting agency, a nonprofit institution, or Monsanto and Novartis, researchers are going to follow the money.

Research doesn't happen for free. It costs money just like military hardware and salaries, foreign aid, highways and everyone's favorite pork-barrel project and everyone's favorite entitlement.

Industry is getting the best possible deal in this equation. They get the best and the brightest minds, without having to build or maintain a corporate research lab.
