MU Aggie Vil. Briggs

WALLS COME DOWN, GO UP. Students joke on campus that UCD stands for Under Construction Daily, and yes, it's seemed that way of late. While some projects have admittedly been a noisy intrusion--like the seismic renovation of the Memorial Union (shown here with its south facade removed)--others are providing some welcome and valuable new spaces. The Life Sciences Addition to Briggs Hall has been completed, providing upgraded and consolidated facilities for the Division of Biological Sciences. The 118,000 square feet of new teaching and research laboratories house some 300 people from 30 research groups that had been spread out in a number of buildings across campus. Work continues on the 21 homes and 16 townhouses being built on the old Aggie Villa site, with some finished and occupied. The project, designed to provide affordable housing for faculty and staff members, features narrow streets, front porches and backyard "graduate student cottages" to promote small-town neighborliness.
