In Memoriam

Werner P. Heuschele '52, D.V.M. '56, died in February at the age of 69 after a long illness. Born in Germany, Dr. Heuschele worked his way up from bus driver at the San Diego zoo to veterinarian, manager of the hospital and director of the Zoological Society of San Diego's Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species. In between positions at the zoo, Dr. Heuschele worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, earned his doctorate in medical microbiology and taught in universities around the country.

Randa Smine, Ph.D. '88, died in July at the age of 37 in a helicopter crash in Siberia. Dr. Smine had been working as an environmental specialist for the London-based European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), frequently traveling to Eastern European and Central Asian countries. She was returning from a mission for EBRD when she was killed. Dr. Smine also previously worked as an environmental consultant in California and in Paris, France. Survivors include her parents and a brother and a sister.

Oren David Pollak, M.S. '88, Ph.D. '98, and his wife, Suki Herman Pollak '92, died in December in a car accident while on vacation in Tasmania. The two, who combined a love of nature in their careers and hobbies, met at UC Davis in Botany 100, Plant Communities of California, a class for which Oren was a teaching assistant. Both worked for the Nature Conservancy, with Oren's position leading them first to Berkeley, where Suki worked for Friends of the Urban Forest, and then to Portland, Ore. Survivors include their infant son, Noah.

Andrew Donnell '96 died in February at the age of 25. As a student, Donnell was the president of the Associated Students of UC Davis. He is survived by his mother and father, a sister and his grandparents.
