Letters to the Editor

MELVYL fan

I keep waiting for an in-depth article on the UC campuswide MELVYL computer system. I still visit the Shields and Physical Science libraries periodically for various research projects and find MELVYL to be an invaluable time-saver that I wish had been in place when I was a student at UCD 2029 years ago. It is also handy for call numbers at UCB, UCSC, UCLA, UCSB and Stanford where I occasionally go for those volumes UCD lacks. CSU Fresno also has a hook-up with MELVYL close to here. For carrying on with research on a shoestring budget, it can't be beat! Who invented it? How many years was it in the making? How did all that mountain of information get loaded into the system?

Oakley Shields, Ph.D. '77
Mariposa

Dr. Shields, you're one of the few alumni we've met from the '70s who doesn't still wax nostalgic for the card catalog system. No relation to Peter J., are you?
