Benson Cheung, M.S. '82, was recently named director of applications and consulting engineering at SynTest Technologies Inc. where he is responsible for the company's worldwide consulting and service business. He is based at Sunnyvale. SynTest provides software for integrated circuit designers and foundries.
Robert Anex, M.S. '83, Ph.D. '95, is an assistant professor of aeronautical and mechanical engineering and a research fellow in the science and public policy program at the University of Oklahoma. He works with fellow Aggie Mark Meo, Ph.D. '83, who directs the program. Stacy Holzman is a partner at Seidel/Holzman, an architectural design firm in San Francisco that received a 1997 National American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Architecture. The firm was recognized for its design of Laureola Oaks, a 16-unit affordable housing project in San Carlos. Mark Vogt is manager for Law/Crandall, a division of Law Engineering Environmental Services Inc. in San Francisco. The company specializes in the restoration and preservation of buildings.
Brian K. Bailey, a wholistic practitioner, has written Secret to Happiness, Inner Peace and Health: Complete Guide to Optimal Wellness of Body, Mind and Spirit. Bailey also gives lectures across the country and appears regularly on "Here's to Your Health," a national radio talk show.
Deborah Dickson Shea, owner of Dickson Design, a graphic design and illustration studio, teaches graphic design at City College of San Francisco. She lives in Redwood City with her husband, Gus Shea, and their baby daughter, Molly. Sharon M. Donovan, Ph.D. '88, an assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, received the College Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in April. Her research focuses on the role of milk and milk-borne growth factors on pediatric nutrition. Paul Hosley is the news director at KFBK News-Talk Radio in Sacramento. He had previously worked as news editor at KCBS News Radio in San Francisco. Hosley and his wife, Sally (Garbeff) Hosley '86, an education program consultant for the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner, live in Davis with their two boys, Nelson, 5, and Garrett, 3. John Van Sant, M.A. '86, recently received his Ph.D. degree in history from the University of Oregon. Stephan Zweifel was recently granted tenure at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., where he is an assistant professor of biology. His research focuses on mitochondrial DNA in yeast and is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Before joining the Carleton College faculty, Zweifel taught briefly at Pacific Lutheran University and at the University of Washington.
Heinz Insu Fenkl, M.A., was recently appointed associate professor of English language and literature at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. He has worked at Vassar College, Sarah Lawrence College and Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. He is currently in the doctoral program at UC Davis. Marine Maj. Wendy A. Stafford, J.D. '87, is currently serving with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Stafford's unit recently participated in an exercise in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and was scheduled to be deployed in the Western Pacific Ocean and the Persian Gulf in April.
James S. Beard, Ph.D., is curator of Earth sciences at the Virginia Museum of Natural History and adjunct associate professor of geology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va. Beard recently participated in an ocean drilling project in the Atlantic Ocean designed to learn more about the geologic formation of Virginia's coastline.
James Flynn, M.S., recently joined Dames & Moore's Seattle office as a hydro-geologist. He is responsible for managing remedial investigation and environmental site assessment projects for the company, which is part of an operation that provides engineering, environmental, construction management and litigation support services. Andrea (Strickland) Maynard finished nursing school in 1996 and is now a registered nurse in the Critical Care Division of Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City. She and her husband, Don, live in Foster City. Michael McEwen designs and builds chandeliers and table and floor lamps for residences and businesses at his lighting studio in Emeryville. Two of McEwen's pieces can be seen in the Hello Again exhibit at the Oakland Museum through July. Carol Tong is a consultant with Decker Communications in San Francisco. Once a coxswain with the UC Davis men's crew club, she occasionally serves as coxswain for the Stanford Rowing Club. Michael Umbenhaur and his wife, Jennifer Walton Umbenhaur '92, had a baby boy, Jonathan Michael, in January.
Timothy M. Harris, M.A. '91, is an associate attorney with Downey, Brand, Seymour & Rohwer in Sacramento. He specializes in civil litigation. Elizabeth Huber was made public affairs manager for AT&T Wireless Services in Sacramento. She oversees the public affairs program for Nevada and Hawaii, and for California from Redding to Fresno. Previously, Huber served as a staff member for both California Assemblyman Thomas Hannigan and Speaker Willie Brown. Henry G. Krull is an orthopaedic surgery resident living in Sierra Madre. He and his wife have three children: Anton, 3, Elan, 20 months, and a newborn, Alyesha June. Yoncha L. Kundupoglu is an attorney with Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. in Dallas. She is currently working toward a master of law's degree from the George Washington University National Law Center. She is also a registered professional engineer in California. Ken Sheldon, M.A., Ph.D. '92, has accepted a tenure-track faculty position with the psychology department at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Debbie Thurmond, M.S. '92, recently received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Iowa.
After serving eight years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, Gerald L. Canfield graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a master of business administration degree. He is now working as an engineering manager in St. Charles, Mo. Kirsten (Frank) Duncan and her husband, Matt Duncan, had their first child, Ethan Loys Duncan, in January. Vic Spain, D.V.M. '93, has been a veterinarian with the San Francisco SPCA for four years and is currently acting chief of the medical staff. Spain also serves as commissioner for the San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission and is president of the board of directors for Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), a nonprofit organization that helps people with HIV and AIDS care for their pets.
