Robert T. Bernardo has accepted a position as a criminal investigator with the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. He is also a special agent candidate for the FBI. Julia Couzens, M.F.A., was artist-in-residence at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for the 1997 spring semester. Her work was featured in a solo exhibition this March at the Christopher Grimes Gallery in Los Angeles. Couzens will have another solo exhibition this September at the Robert Else Gallery at California State University, Sacramento. Kim Darling is working toward her teaching credential at the College of Notre Dame in Belmont. She writes, "What happened to the D Building/Tercero students from the 1985-86 school years? If any of you are out there, I am still living at home in San Mateo and would love to hear from you! Also, any Phi Mus that are out there I would love to hear from you, too!" Marcy (Novick) Greenberg is a senior instructional designer for Intel Corp. She is also working on her doctoral degree in education at the University of Southern California. She lives in San Jose. Scott Hutsenpiller is a senior apparel designer for Nike Inc., in Portland, Ore., where he oversees the outdoor/active wear clothing line. After graduating from UC Davis, Hutsenpiller studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology for two years. He has also worked for Ralph Lauren's Polo line and Tommy Hilfiger Menswear in New York. Roan Lamp and Vani Gouri Bathala '92 were married in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in September. Lamp is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Universiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands, and Bathala is working on a degree in fashion design in Amsterdam. Navy Lt. Stephen Wienker has been designated a patrol plane commander assigned to the naval air station at Barbers Point, Hawaii. In addition to being in charge of the flight crew, Wienker is responsible for ocean surveillance, aerial reconnaissance and search and rescue missions.
Corinne (Caulk) Green received her master's degree in radio, television and film from San Diego State University in 1993 and is now working in the operations department of KGTV, the ABC affiliate in San Diego. Her husband, Paul Green '92, teaches sixth- and eighth-grade science and is pursuing a master's degree in education from San Diego State University. They were expecting their first child in May. Susie is a national sales manager with Miller Freeman Publishing, and Peter is a product manager with Black and Decker. They live in Baltimore, Md. David Neill graduated with distinction from McGeorge School of Law in May 1996 and is now an associate at Littler, Mendelson, Fastiff, Tichy & Mathiason law firm in Sacramento. The firm represents management in the field of labor and employment law. Mark Perrone was promoted to administrative manager at Cargill-Nutrena Feeds in Albany, N.Y. He lives in Delmar, N.Y., with his wife, Monica (Cardoza) Perrone, and their son. Nancy (Eccles) Ramirez received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1995 and currently works for a small minority-owned-and-operated firm, the Law Offices of Eugene Flemate, in San Jose. Ramirez and her husband, Jeff, live in Santa Clara. Tiffany Whitaker Bird is a technical editor for Lotus Development in Mountain View. She and her husband are expecting their first child in August.
Ryan Bezerra is an associate attorney with Sinsheimer, Schiebelhut and Baggett in San Luis Obispo. His wife, Tracie Kluver Bezerra, is working on a novel and caring for their 2-year-old daughter, Rachel. The two were married a week after they graduated from UC Davis. Michael Chang recently completed a judicial clerkship with a federal judge. He is now an associate attorney at the Century CityLos Angeles office of the New York firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP where he specializes in federal court litigation. Edward Dowd received a master's degree in public management from California State University, Hayward, and has been a police officer in Alameda since 1993. He is also restoring an Edwardian home in Noe Valley. Jill (Everett) Hornbeck married Neal Hornbeck in January in Livermore. Also, along with another interior design firm, she won a MAME award for best model home design in the Central Valley. Long H. Nguyen was recently promoted to Marine corporal for his superior job performance. Alex Sandoval, a bilingual consultant for the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing, received his master's degree in public administration in May from the University of Southern California, Sacramento Center for Public Policy. Previously, Sandoval served as editor and publisher of El Hispano-Americano, a bilingual newspaper in Bakersfield, and in 1987 was a candidate for the Bakersfield city council. Louis Shih is a buyer of men's clothing for Far Eastern Department Stores in Taiwan. Ian S. Topf graduated from the University of Missouri Law School in Columbia in 1995 and is currently working with Mid-Missouri Legal Services Corp. in Columbia. He plans to marry Maribel Arango in June. They were introduced by Darren Goon '93. Darryl Babe Wilson is a co-author of Surviving in Two Worlds: Contemporary Native American Voices (University of Texas Press) with Lois Crozier-Hogle. The book is a compilation of interviews with 26 Native American leaders, including UC Davis faculty members Steven Crum, Sarah Hutchison and Jack Forbes, and alumni David Lucero, Kathy Morsea and Christopher Peters.
Julie M. Bertram-Roth gave birth to her first son, Anthony Tyler, in November. She lives in Lemoore with her husband, Anthony P. Roth, a sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps. Jason G. Emmick, who served as president of his class for the past two years, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh medical school in May. His brother Gus G. Emmick graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. They will both do their medical residencies at the University of Rochester in New York in the internal medicine and pediatric program. Laura Masner graduated from Golden Gate University Law School in 1996 and is now an attorney with the Law Offices of Greene, Chauvel, Descalso & Tully in San Mateo. She plans to marry Matthew Rasmussen in August. Alvin D. Vaughn Jr. is an associate at the Ferguson Group, a lobbying firm based in Washington D.C. He represents municipal clients on transportation, tax and water resource issues. Previously, Vaughn served on the legislative staff of U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer.
Val Encomio is a Peace Corps volunteer who is currently working at the Institute of Business, Management and Law in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia. He teaches several courses and advises small businesses. Sam Fleischer is working toward his Ph.D. in English literature at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Sanoi Guzy graduated from the University of San Diego Law School in May. Diane Krantz, an assistant English professor at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, will take over as coordinator of the university's Women's Study program in July. Her new book, The Life and Text of Julian of Norwich: A Poetics of Enclosure, will be published by Peter Lang later this summer. Navy Ensign Pedro R. Mercado, a naval aviator, received his "Wings of Gold" after flight training at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Joe Obegi is head teacher in the infant room at UC Davis Child Development Center. Alexander Orland, a Peace Corps volunteer, teaches English and computer resource development at the Computer School in Beloretsk, Russia. He is currently developing an internship program for the students and is working to help bring Internet access to the city. Neil A. Rabara was commissioned a Navy ensign after completing Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla.
Noah Apodaca is a senior engineering clerk with ITT Cannon in Santa Ana. The company produces electrical connectors for various aerospace projects, including the International Space Station. Christopher Aquino was chosen as one of the first Peace Corps volunteers to serve in South Africa. During the three-year assignment he will work as a school and community development adviser. Roseann De Rosa is a Peace Corps volunteer who is currently teaching English in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
