In Memoriam

Robert N. Rebholtz '60 of Boise, Idaho, died of cancer in January at the age of 58. After graduating from UC Davis, Mr. Rebholtz received a master of business administration degree from Stanford University and later co-founded Agri Beef Co. He served in numerous positions in the livestock industry, including chair of the National Livestock and Meat Board and the Beef Industry Council; president of the Idaho Cattlemen's Association; and director of the Idaho Beef Council. Shortly before his death, the National Cattleman's Foundation of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association named him the "Cattle Businessman of the Year." Mr. Rebholtz was also the 56th largest landowner in the United States, according to the February 1997 Worth magazine. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Robert Jr., Paul and Tom; daughter, Teresa; and four grandchildren.

Larry Turbovsky '68, Cred. '69, died in November at the age of 53 from complications after surgery. A former teacher and coach at Pierce High School in Arbuckle, Mr. Turbovsky had been working as an engineer-paramedic for the Pollock Pines­Camino Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, GiGi; stepdaughter, Francheska Perez; and his father and sister.

Christopher C. Hoskins '69, M.A. '75, J.D. '75, died in March following a short illness. He was 49. During his years at UC Davis, Hoskins helped establish Unitrans, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with the highest grade-point average in his class. He later worked for the transit systems in Berkeley and San Jose and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Most recently, Hoskins worked for the Department of Agriculture in Davis. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoskins, and his sister, Connie.

Thomas L. Spurgeon '73, M.S. '75, Ph.D. '83, died in January at the age of 46 following an automobile accident. Dr. Spurgeon was an associate professor of anatomy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. His wife, Patricia Brooks, who did her residency at the UC Davis Medical Center, took her own life following her husband's death. She was 39. Dr. Brooks was an assistant professor of pathology at Colorado State University. Dr. Spurgeon is survived by two sons, Aaron and Kyle; his father, Leslie Spurgeon; his mother, Bonnie Goulding Elwood; and his brother, Galen. Dr. Brooks is survived by her mother, Helen, and her brother, Greg.

James W. Barger, D.V.M. '78, died in February at the age of 44 following a motorcycle accident. He was president of the Merced Computer Compatibles group and had served as president of the Northern San Joaquin Valley Veterinary Medical Association. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Lester J. Barger; his sisters, Evalyn Gelhaus and Marcia Hall; and his brother, Joseph Barger.

Bente Stangenes Shaskey '78 died in February in Palo Alto at the age of 41. She is survived by her husband, Norman.

George A. Bowman '40 died in December of cancer. During his years at UC Davis, he wrote for The California Aggie, serving as editor in 1939. He was a member of ROTC and, following graduation, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II, he served in India, Burma and China. He remained in the Air Reserve, retiring in 1966 as a lieutenant colonel. After the war, he worked with University of California Extension as a farm advisor. Then, in 1953, he received a master's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin and later worked as research editor for Washington State University's College of Agriculture. Before retiring in 1981, he created Advance Magazine, an agricultural research publication. Mr. Bowman is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.

John Randall Goss, '71, M.S. '75, died in January at his home in Cumming, Iowa, of a brain tumor. He was 48. He had recently retired from E.I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., where he had served as product development manager. He is survived by his wife, Alison; his son, Peter; his daughter, Cory; his parents; two sisters; and a brother.
