ZIP-LOCK PETALS: This fresh-cut cross-section of the bud of a closed lily flower shows the suture, or junction, between two petals. Environmental horticulture professor Michael Reid studies the intricate mechanisms involved in controlling the opening of flowers. Such information may help devise tools to hasten or delay opening to improve postharvest handling of this crop. Reid took the image with a stereomicroscope.
