'80 Jeffrey C. Hoopes was promoted to senior vice president, director of business development and elected to the boards of directors of Swinerton Inc. and Swinerton & Walberg, construction services companies in San Francisco. He joined the company in 1984 as a project manager in the San Francisco office and has served as vice president in both the Los Angeles and San Francisco offices.

'81 Kevin J.H. Dettmar, an associate professor of English at Clemson University in South Carolina, has written The Illicit Joyce of Postmodernism: Reading Against the Grain, published by University of Wisconsin Press. Joel Forest Maybury joined the Foreign Service in 1995. After a period of training at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Arlington, Va., he was sent to Djibouti in East Africa. There he is serving a two-year tour as the embassy's political officer and vice consul. As political officer, he is responsible for drafting the annual human rights report for Djibouti, which is published by Congress, and he oversees several economic development projects and democracy and human rights projects. As vice consul, he is responsible for visa, passport and notarial services required by Americans and people wishing to travel to the United States. William G. Phelps, D.V.M. '87, recently opened a small-animal practice in Amityville, N.Y. He and his wife, Michelle Phelps, have a son, Brendan.

'82 Jane Ellen Cross was appointed African American student retention specialist at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn. She provides information, advocacy and support for students of color and tracks students' progress through graduation. She also coordinates the Cultural Department, a group of Buddhist lawyers, educators, artists and health professionals, and is the young women's division leader of Soka Gakkai International, a peace, culture and education organization for young Buddhist women. Lynette Henderson, D.V.M. '95, has taken over daily operation of the newly formed Animal Medical Centers of the South Bay, a three-hospital corporation based in Chula Vista. Malcolm MacDonald recently resigned as associate director of family practice residency at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1996. He is now traveling in Asia, planning to relocate in California when he returns. Lisa (Hansen) Vander Meulen has joined Design Plus, a Grand Rapids, Mich., firm, as an interior architect. She lives in Holland, Mich., with her husband, Dean and two children, Alex, 5, and Kathryne, 1. They are building a home in Grand Haven, Mich. Deborah Schoenberg is president and founder of Schoenberg Design Associates Inc., a landscape design company in Reno, Nev. William Sakamoto White received his Ph.D. in sociology from Georgia State University in Atlanta and this fall joined the faculty of the sociology department at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.

'83 Greg Hewett's first collection of poetry, To Collect the Flesh (New Rivers Press), was one of six winners in the Minnesota Voices Project Competition. Hewett lives and writes in St. Paul, Minn. Lurlyn Pero, a physician with Medical Specialists Ltd., has been elected to the board of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Phoenix, a nonprofit organization that provides adult education in senior nutrition health and physical education. She lives in Phoenix.

'84 Heinz Insu Fenkl, M.A., has written a novel, Memories of My Ghost Brother, which was selected for Barnes & Noble's "Discover Great New Writers" series. The book is an autobiographical story of an Amer-asian boy growing up in Korea during the 1960s. Fenkl teaches creative writing, Asian American literature and Korean literature at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. George Griffin was recently appointed principal of Winters High School. Before his appointment, Griffin had been the unit administrator and student activities director at Woodland High School. Griffin is an alumnus of Winters High. Patrick M. Hollister has been promoted to assistant athletic director at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo. He was previously the director of intramurals and recreation. He also teaches physical education classes, which include open water survival and weight training. Lisa Kitinoja, M.S., has been a consultant for the World Bank Agricultural Diversification Project, Winroch International and USAID. These jobs have taken her to India, Senegal and Morocco for extension work on post-harvest handling of horticulture crops. Tim Knotts is a partner in a financial consulting firm in West Long Branch, N.J., where he lives with his wife and four children. He writes, "I think I'm the only native Californian, Cal Aggie, in New Jersey. . . . I miss the Sierra Nevada the most." Kristia Owens graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago, in 1989 and has been living and practicing in Mesa, Ariz., since 1990. She recently joined Southwestern Eye Center. She plans to marry Victor Yarter in the spring. Nicolette (Schaup) Smith, an equine management instructor at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, was included in the 1996 edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Members of Who's Who are nominated by their students and selected for distinguished teaching. She lives with her husband, David, north of Iowa Falls, where she raises elk.

'85 Steve Clark is the men's head tennis coach at UC Irvine. Before this appointment, he coached one year at Texas Tech and another year at Chapman University, where he received a master's degree in education. He directs camps annually for Fellowship of Christian Athletes and still plays tennis competitively during the off-season; he also sailboards and scuba dives. He and his wife of six years, Kelly, live in Newport Beach with their two rott-weilers, Milo and Otis. Kathryn L. Fitzgerald is a self-employed, independent, registered representative with Quest Capital Strategies and a financial network specialist with Alpha Omicron Pi fraternity. She and her husband live in Napa and have eight sheep, two llamas and a dog. Craig B. Grossgart recently transferred to Colombo, Sri Lanka, as country manager for American President Lines. During his 10 years with APL he has worked in four different states in sales and sales management. Robert S. Johnston, M.S., has been named general manager of mid-Atlantic operations for Dames & Moore Group, a company that provides engineering, environmental, construction management and litigation support services worldwide. Johnston is based in the firm's Cranford, N.J., office. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and serves on the board of directors of the Association of Firms Practicing in the Geosciences. Joseph G. Monteleone, M.B.A. '90, is a procurement specialist with Hewlett-Packard living in Corvallis, Ore., with his wife, Maria, a senior financial analyst for Hewlett-Packard. He writes, "We love living in Corvallis, a town much like Davis." Lori (Farnworth) Pearce was recently promoted to development manager at Visio Corp. She started with the company, then named Axon Corp., in 1991 after spending six years at Hewlett-Packard. She lives in Seattle, Wash., with her husband, Michael Pearce '86, who teaches at Seattle Central Community College. After five years with DNAX Research Institute, he returned to school and received his master's degree in immunology from University of Washington in Seattle in 1994.

'86 Hugo Bellen, Ph.D., is associate professor and director of the graduate program in developmental biology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Robert Cameron Bolt is the chief executive officer of Wallop Software, a Foster City-based Web application development business. He lives in Hillsborough with his wife, Jennifer, and three children, Mary, Christopher and Catherine. Ana Calubiran was married in July 1995 and had a baby this August. She is currently on leave from a teaching career. Alison Greene is an attorney with Larson & Burnham in Oakland. She and Don Moats '87, both graduates of Hastings Law School, live in Berkeley with their two children, Big Boy Bob and Kiki. Moats recently opened his own law office in Lafayette. Douglas Rodenberger received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and is working as a geophysicist for Shell Oil Co. in New Orleans, La. He and his wife, Alicia (Zavattaro) Rodenberger '88, a software developer for General Electric Aerospace in Pennsylvania before she became a full-time mom, live in Metaire, La., with their 11/2-year-old son, Henry. Maja Vito received her D.V.M. from North Carolina State University in May 1995. She is currently a staff veterinarian with the Hawaiian Humane Society. She lives in Honolulu with her husband, Kevin Edwards, and their 1-year-old son, Benjamin Wolf.

'87 Richard M. Brazil, D.V.M. '88, has developed Ranch Vision, a software program designed to create a computer model of ranch businesses and help ranchers make more profitable management decisions. Brazil and his wife, Erin Walsh Brazil, D.V.M. '88, have three children, Keely, Michaela and John, and live in Potter Valley. Julie (Wiggins) Brown earned her M.S. in biology from California State University, Fresno, in 1989 and is now a full-time mom. She lives in Mesa, Ariz., where her husband attends law school. At press time, they were expecting the birth of their third son and planning to move back to California in the coming year. Diana (May) and Connard Cali '89 were married in August after meeting at Ryerson Hall and dating since their freshman year. Connard runs his family's import business, and Diana is a certified public accountant for a real-estate investment firm. The couple lives in Davis. John Givens, M.A., is assistant professor of Russian at the University of Rochester in New York and, with Laura Michael, has translated 25 short stories by Vasily Shukshin in a work titled Stories from a Siberian Village. Rod Anthony Wing, Ph.D., a plant molecular geneticist, has joined Clemson University in South Carolina as the first holder of the Robert and Lois Coker Trustees Chair in Molecular Genetics. Wing, who was an associate professor at Texas A&M University, uses genetic cloning to isolate agriculturally important genes in a variety of crops from cotton to tomatoes. He uses these genes to improve both quality and yield.

'88 Jeffrey Davis is an editor at the Stanford University Medical Center News Bureau and a former editor with Mother Jones magazine in San Francisco. He is also a freelance writer for publications such as the New York Times Magazine, Men's Journal and Outside. Lawrence Howell and Heather Tiernan '89 were married in September. The two, who met on UC Davis' rowing team, live in Lake Tahoe, Nev., and work in Minden, Nev. Donna Marmorstein is a copy editor for the Aberdeen American News in South Dakota.

Cal Aggie Marching Band 1989 '89 Bronwyn C. Hogan will go to Finland in January on a Fulbright grant to conduct research on bats. Her husband, Robert Broderick, will accompany her during the 10-month stay. William J. Kohnen and his wife, Eleanor V. Kohnen '91, had a daughter, Anne Villar, in July. Heather Muir began the M.B.A. program at the University of Washington in Seattle in September. Curtis Sicheneder and Kim Fowler '90 have been living in Germany since 1994 where they work as civilians for the military. The couple had their first child, KC Gail, in August. Colin Sumner received his master's degree in English from San Diego State University. His thesis project was an encyclopedic reference for Lloyd Alexander's Westmark series. Susan M. (Mendes) Williams received her D.V.M. degree in 1994 from Tuskegee University in Alabama. She is married to Orlando Williams, who also has a veterinary degree, and they have a 2-year-old son. She is attending Michigan State University as a Ph.D. candidate in pathology.
