In Memoriam

Ralph H. Moss '27 died in November in Dixon at the age of 92 following a short illness. Throughout his life, Mr. Moss was a strong supporter of the Davis campus. After serving as director and vice president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, he was president in 1954­1956. He was active in fund-raising for construction of the Memorial Union, was a founder and charter member of Davis Chancellor's Club and a trustee of the UC Davis Foundation. In 1968 he received the University Service Award and, in 1980, CAAA's Jerry W. Fielder Memorial Award for outstanding service. He is survived by his sister Evelyn Mace, a niece and nephew.

David O. Hough '69, M.D. '73, died in September of a heart attack while on sabbatical at the University of Colorado. He was 50. Dr. Hough was the director of Michigan State University's Sports Medicine Program and served as physician to the university's football and basketball teams. He is survived by his wife, Jill, and two children, Jeffrey and Kristen.

Susan Ellis Hanzo '71, M.A. '73, died in September at her home in Davis following a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Hanzo, professor emeritus of English, her father, two sisters and nieces and nephews.

Louise May Wong, M.D. '74, died in October of cancer at the age of 47. She graduated first in her class from UC Davis medical school and did her residency and fellowship training at UC Davis Medical Center. A Davis resident, Dr. Wong was a specialist in pulmonary disease. She is survived by her parents, a sister and a brother.

Gordon T. Watters '80 died in August in Concord at the age of 38 following a two-and-a-half year battle with brain cancer. Mr. Watters was a chemical engineer with Chevron Corp. for 16 years. An avid cyclist, he participated in many rides, including the Davis Double Century. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Davies) Watters '82, his daughters, Sarah and Elisabeth, two brothers, his parents and his grandmother.

Thomas Charles Hoonan '82 died in July at the age of 36 from cancer. He graduated cum laude from UC Davis and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the national collegiate scholastic honor society. He was a self-employed writer and graphic designer living in Moraga. Hoonan is survived by his parents, two brothers, two nieces and a nephew.

Mark Patrick August '87 died in January 1996 following an automobile accident. Mr. August was a component engineer with Silicon Graphics in Mountain View. He had also worked for Apple Computer, where he patented several inventions, after he received a master's degree from UC Berkeley. He is survived by his wife, Tamara, his son, Russell Mark August, his parents and two sisters.

Winfield Scott Cacheleur Sr. '89 died in September at the age of 38 following an automobile accident. He was an administrator for a group home for mentally disadvantaged adults in Pocatello, Idaho, a professor of sociology at San Joaquin Valley Community College and a substance abuse counselor at Central High School in Rexburg, Idaho. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Lee Cacheleur, two children, six stepchildren, his parents and three brothers.

Scott A. Simons '94 died in August at the age of 24 following an automobile accident while vacationing in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Mr. Simons was a student at the University of Denver School of Law, where he had one year of studies left. He is survived by his parents, Ron and Donna Simons, and his sister, Megan.
