Jonathan Stubbs received a master of science degree in industrial ergonomics from Luleå University of Technology in Luleå, Sweden.
Robert J. Garcia, D.V.M., was named member-at-large of the executive committee of the California Veterinary Medical Association. Garcia, a general practice veterinarian in San Jose, is married to Jan Adelson, a surgeon; they live with a West Highland white terrier, Piper, and fly to most CVMA meetings in their own plane. Their son, Ryan, is attending law school at the University of Texas. Jeffrey L. Graper was appointed president of Systems West Engineers Inc., in Eugene, Ore. Systems West provides civil, mechanical and electrical engineering services to commercial and institutional agencies throughout the Northwest. In addition to serving as president of the firm, Graper is the principal electrical engineer.
Martin M. Yan, M.S. '77, a 1997 recipient of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' Award of Distinction, is a food and restaurant consultant, certified master chef and host of the PBS television show "Yan Can Cook."
Jeffrey Becom has had published a book of his photo-graphs, with text co-written by his wife, Sally Jean Aberg. Images from the book, Maya Color: The Painted Villages of Mesoamerica, were exhibited at the Weston Gallery in Carmel this fall; his photographs, watercolors and oil paintings are included in public and private collections throughout the world.
Jack L. Bois led the movement this year to unionize doctors of podiatric medicine because, "like a growing number of specialists, we're getting squeezed out of the heath-care system," he said. Bois is in private practice in San Jose, where he lives with his wife, Tami, and children. Peggy Jones, chief deputy administrative director for California's workers' compensation division, was keynote speaker for the third annual Workers' Compensation Symposium sponsored by California State University, Bakersfield. Fred Snyder, M.F.A. '77, recently had his first solo exhibition in Northern California after showing his work across the country over the last 10 years. The exhibit, Works by the Water's Edge, was a collection of painted wooden sculptures done in the style of Bay Area figurative painting.
Ernest G. Barrieau II has been appointed executive vice president of sales and marketing at Integrated Packaging Assembly Corp., a semiconductor packaging foundry in San Jose. Barrieau has more than 20 years of experience in both sales and operations in the semiconductor industry. Mike Cawley, Cred. '78, principal of Lemoore High School for the past seven years, was recently honored by the Association of California School Administrators as California's 1997 Secondary Principal of the Year. A former instructor and coach at Chester High School, Cawley was also the 1988 North Section California Interscholastic Federation Wrestling Coach of the Year. Mark A. Coryell graduated from Arizona State University in May with a master's degree in public administration, after being honored by the School of Public Affairs faculty with the Ken McDonald Scholarship. '80, general manager of Wenmat Inc. and manager of the company's five sports and fitness centers in the Sacramento area, received this year's IDEA Fitness Director of the Year award. IDEA, an association of fitness professionals, honored James for her work in inspiring people to commit to a healthy lifestyle. Rose Kelly is artist-in-residence at the California Arts Council and works at the National Institute of Art and Disabilities. Last fall she traveled to Japan for a two-week speaking tour, followed by a trip to Kyoto and Nara to research Bunraku puppet theater. In June, she exhibited jewelry, crowns and mixed-media pieces in Seattle Preview & Open Studio at Studio 4 gallery in Oakland. She also had a piece in the recent exhibition The Shoe Show at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, which featured shoe-inspired works by 50 artists, including Andy Warhol and Yoko Ono. Walter H. Leimert is involved in a family real estate and construction business. He is married to children's book author and illustrator Karen Leimert, and they live in the Los Angeles area with their three children. "The days of homemade beer parties, Jerry Brown rallies on the Quad, Outdoor Adventure raft trips to the South Fork of the American River and late-night study marathons are but pleasant memories," he writes. Jon R. Smith, an Army lieutenant colonel, is currently stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. He serves as chief of the Regional Issues Section in the Intelligence Directorate. The section deals with issues regarding weapons of mass destruction, ballistic missiles, regional maritime problems and information warfare. Smith's wife, Janet (Dodge) '75, is a middle school physical education teacher and country club aquatics director. Both are active in local Boy Scout activities with their three sons, ages 10, 14 and 16.
Lawrence J. Gumbiner, a member of the U.S. Department of State, has been selected to head the Environmental Hub for Central America and the Caribbean, operating out of the U.S. Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica. He is responsible for coordinating U.S. environmental foreign policy throughout Central America and the Caribbean basin. Mark Geyer has been appointed superintendent of the Etna Union Elementary School District and is completing his Ed.D. at the University of Southern California. His wife, Dale Geyer, and their three children live in Northern California. Jo Kohn, M.S., a chemistry professor at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash., recently spent two weeks volunteering at a cultural summer camp for underprivileged children in Istanbul. George Reyes, J.D., is a partner at Best, Best & Krieger in Long Beach, where he has worked for the past two decades. Reyes specializes in sales transactions involving the purchase of one business by another. Christopher J. Ruhm has been appointed the Jefferson-Pilot Excellence Professor in the Department of Economics of the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He spent the past year working as a senior economist with President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors and is co-author of the book Turbulence in the American Workplace (Oxford University Press).
Cheryl E. Harrison is a 1997 recipient of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' Award of Distinction. She is owner and partner in the Harrison Design Group and principal and creative design director for Frank Harrison Perez, San Francisco. She also serves on the Design Advisory Council for the Department of Environmental Design and initiated the design internship program for UC Davis. Melvin P. Jordan Jr. is a construction manager for the Vallejo City Unified School District, specializing in new construction and the modernization of public school buildings. He is also a member of the buildings and grounds board for Community Congregational Church. His wife, Cheryl K. (Pearson) Jordan, Cred. '80, teaches kindergarten at Beverly Hills Elementary School in Vallejo. She has recently received her Language Specialist credential--valuable in her classroom where four languages are spoken. The Jordans have two children and live in Benicia. Ed Livingston is an associate professor and vice chair of the Department of Surgery at UCLA and chief of surgery at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He and his wife, Eve, have three children, Sarah, Kenny and Elizabeth. Regina Schroder, J.D. '82, an attorney in the Sacramento law firm of Bartel, Eng, Linn & Schroder, has been appointed to chair the taxation section of the State Bar of California. A business and tax law attorney, Schroder is the first Sacramento lawyer to head the section--which has 4,000 members throughout the state.
