'80 Navy Cmdr. Josette L. Rice, M.S., recently reported for duty at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

'81 Susan Bony, an expert in cash management for business banking customers, has joined SierraWest Bank as vice president of cash management and electronic banking services. Working from the Sacramento office, Bony has responsibilities covering the bank's entire service area, which includes 12 offices in California and Nevada communities. Siavash S. Haghighi, M.S., Ph.D. '82, M.S. '87, associate professor of neurosurgery/physiology, has been elected director of clinical neurophysiology laboratories at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His research is focused on traumatic spinal cord injury. Patrick Sharkey has been named general curator of Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas. In addition to being responsible for a one-acre rain forest exhibit, Sharkey will oversee a 2 million gallon aquarium, planned to open in 1999.

'82 Tina Allen is a right-of-way agent for the California Department of Transportation in Oakland and is also working on her M.B.A. After leaving Davis, Allen worked in Washington, D.C., as a legislative aide--but returned to California for the warmer climate. Richard Campbell is vice president in charge of corporate development for SECOR. He lives in Atlanta with his wife and son. Kevin G. Hart has completed his residency in internal medicine at UC San Francisco. He now works as a primary care internist with Camino Medical Group in Mountain View, where he lives with his wife, Joan. Dennis Richardson, an optometrist for more than 13 years, has his own practice, Advanced Optical Services. Both his office and his home are located in the Los Angeles area.

'83 Mostafa Ghandehari, Ph.D., a library assistant in the reference department at the Central Library of the University of Texas at Arlington, taught in the mathematics department at Texas Christian University during the fall 1997 semester. Carol Iida, D.V.M. '88, received the California Veterinary Medical Association's Registered Veterinary Technician's Outstanding Veterinarian of the Year award, which honors practitioners who utilize their technical staff to their fullest advantage. Charles "Chappie" Jones is program manager at Pacific Bell, overseeing the company's $80 million affinity marketing program. He and his wife, Kelli, and their two children make their home in San Jose. Faye Braum Smothers is director of marketing for Richard Heath & Associates, an energy consulting firm based in Berkeley. Smothers and her husband have two children and live in El Sobrante.

'84 Dino Gay, who worked for 11 years at UC Davis as an illustrator, instructor and senior artist, was featured in an October exhibition--titled Fish--at the Art Effects Gallery in Woodland. The show featured Gay's acrylic paintings of fish that had been done on wood door panels. Gay now operates a graphic design studio and plans to offer children's art classes in association with the Art Effects Gallery. Gay lives in Woodland with his wife, Katie, daughter, Ricci, and son, Reggie. Navy Lt. Cmdr. John R. Germany recently reported for duty at Naval Air Reserve, Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego. Sara Koda (Henderson) Higman has returned to work as club administrator of Looe Golf Club Ltd., part of the St. Mellion International Group of Cornwall, England, after an extended maternity leave. She is married to Ian Higman and mother to Zoe. Daryl C. Lucas is co-owner and private investigator for Maye Investigations. He specializes in workers' compensation liability claims and says putting the brakes on insurance fraud makes his days as a stockbroker pale in comparison. His office is in San Dimas, and he lives in Rancho Cucamonga. Craig Christopher Martinez started his graphics career at Marquez-Hardy Designs in Sacramento and has worked his way up to part ownership of the business, now called Martinez-Hardy Communication and Graphic Design. He remembers his days as an Aggie with affection and says, "What a great group of people." Karl M. Pierce has returned to San Francisco after serving two and a half years with the Peace Corps in Honduras. He is now employed by the National Park Service as a supervisory park ranger in Golden Gate National Recreation Area. He lives in San Pablo. Yoshimi Shibata is a 1997 recipient of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' Award of Distinction. He has retired from his family business, the Mt. Eden Floral Co., which has six locations throughout the Bay Area. He served as president of the Wholesale Florist and Florist Supply Association, as well as a member of the boards of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce for Northern California, Sumitomo Bank of California and the California State Chamber of Commerce. Michael J. Sterns, D.V.M., was named vice president of business development for Vascular Therapeutics Inc., in Mountain View.

'86 Maurice "Mo" Geddis received a master's degree in criminal justice from California State University, Sacramento, in 1995 and is now a correctional counselor. He and his wife have two children and live in Sacramento, where he is actively involved with the community through St. Paul's Baptist Church. Thomas H. Shellhammer, M.S. '89, Ph.D. '96, is an assistant professor of food engineering in the departments of Food Science and Technology, and Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Ohio State University. His wife, Gina Pilhofer Shellhammer, M.S. '91, taught chemistry at Berkeley High School until the birth of their daughter Lily. His father, Howard Shellhammer '57, Ph.D. '61, retired from the Department of Biological Sciences at San Jose State University in 1996 after 35 years. Steve Thompson, M.S. '92, is on the research staff in the Biological Control Laboratory of the entomology department at Texas A&M University. He married Maxine J. El Maalem, a systems analyst at Texas A&M, on July 4, and the two bought a home in Bryan, Texas, in April. Erik Vink was named a 1997 Norman and Ruth Berg Fellow of the Soil and Water Conservation Society. He will participate in the Berg Forum in Washington, D.C., in February with 16 other fellows from the United States and Canada.

'87 Larry Doleman is a project manager for 3COM Worldwide Service Marketing in Santa Clara. Doleman will be working abroad, where he will apply his expertise in computer networking equipment. Evan Olson is currently working for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice as a juvenile probation officer for serious habitual offenders. He lives in Bonita Springs, Fla.

'88 Heidi Kumao had a recent exhibition called Nervous Systems: Recent Works by Heidi Kumao at The Alternative Museum in New York. Deborah K. Maus has been named the executive director for the South Natomas Transportation Management Association. The association works to alleviate traffic congestion and air pollution in the South Natomas area of Sacramento. Previously, she worked at the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District where she was the marketing manager for the district's mobile source division. Brian S. Pedersen, M.S., has been appointed a faculty member of Roanoke College for the 1997­98 academic year, serving as a visiting assistant professor of biology. Before joining Roanoke College, Pedersen was an assistant professor of environmental science at American University in Bulgaria and a post-doctoral fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Idilia Sepulvida and Don Yoshimura were married in October after meeting during their last quarter at UC Davis. They live in Salinas and work on the family farm, Yoshimura Nursery Inc.

'89 Julie Levy, D.V.M., has joined the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida as an assistant professor in small animal internal medicine. After graduating from UC Davis, she did an internship at Boston's Angell Memorial Animal Hospital and a residency in internal medicine at North Carolina State University. She remained at North Carolina State to complete a Ph.D. in immunology and now studies feline immunodeficiency virus. Patricia O'Shea received an M.B.A. in marketing/management from Indiana University Graduate Business School in May. She was awarded a full-tuition scholarship from the Consortium for Graduate Study in Business and earned a Global Business Certificate of Achievement for completing a summer internship as a logistics analyst with Siemens AG in Fuerth, Germany. She lives in San Jose and works for Skyway Freight Systems, a third-party logistics provider, as an industry marketing manager. Bryan Phillips has founded Chucky's Auto Sales & Brokering Group and is a founding member of the Banker's Network. He is also treasurer for the Chamber of Commerce in Sacramento and is headed for Herea, Zimbabwe, to present the mayor with a proclamation declaring Sacramento and Herea "sister cities." He and his wife, Stefanie, have two children and live in Sacramento.
