In Memoriam

Robert Clifford Farris '37 died in August at the age of 82 after a long illness. During his years at UC Davis, he was active in his fraternity, played varsity basketball and served as president of the Associated Students of UC Davis. With his bachelor's degree in dairy science, he began a long dairy career working as an assistant to the president for both Borden's and Darigold before pursuing volunteer work for the I.E.S.C., serving on five tours to developing countries as a dairy business adviser. Mr. Farris is survived by his wife, Rita Marie; sons, Robert, Mike, Timothy and Gregory; daughters, Linda, Roberta, Laura and Barbara; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Bradley.

Helen N. Taylor '87, D.V.M. '92, was killed by an unknown assailant in May, 1996, in her home in Trinidad, where she was a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Port of Spain. She was 28 years old. An honors student, she completed her B.S. degree in three years at the age of 19 and had to wait a year before being accepted to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where she was one of the youngest students to earn a degree. She spent some time in Kenya before taking up her position in Trinidad.

Wendy Elizabeth Brown King '88 died in August at the age of 31. Ms. King was killed in a traffic accident in Eugene, Ore., while on vacation with her family. After graduating from UC Davis, Ms. King completed a registered nurse program at Seattle Central Community College and most recently worked as a geriatric nurse at Christa Nursing Home in Seattle. Ms. King is survived by her husband, David King, who was seriously injured in the accident; two daughters, Shelby and Michelle; mother, Elizabeth Burlingame-Smith; father and step-mother, Robert and Laurice Brown; sisters, Aimee Johnson and Jamie Treat; brother, Paul Brown; and stepbrother Philip Treat. Fellow UC Davis graduates Jon Van Valkenburg and Edie Chezik have established the Wendy Brown King '88 Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Division of Biological Sciences. The scholarship will provide support for undergraduate majors in physiology. Margrete Doksum '92 died suddenly in September at her home. She had spent the last year and a half teaching English in Tokyo, Japan, and traveling extensively throughout Europe and Asia. She is survived by her mother, Maria DeLasAlas of El Cerrito; father, Kjell Doksum, and stepmother, Joan Fujimura of Berkeley; sisters, Kathryn Doksum of Seaside, Ore., and Teresa Doksum of Annapolis, Md.

Christopher Datz '93 died in September at the age of 25 in a plane crash near York, Penn. He had been taking pilot's lessons and was on his first solo flight when he reported engine trouble and crashed soon after. He was living and working in Washington, D.C., as an attorney at Arnold & Porter, after having graduated from Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law. He is survived by his parents, George and Lin; and his brother, Jamie, all from Fremont.
