1956Berl Koch, Ph.D., writes that he and his wife, Tina, are living in a cottage in a retirement village in Manhattan, Kan., and "enjoying each and every day." They are active in volunteer work and their church. The couple raised three children, and Berl retired in 1988 after more than three decades on the faculty of Kansas State University in the animal science and industries department
1960Max "Kip" Herzog received the Holstein Association USA's 2008 Elite Breeder Award. He was honored for his work with his family's Sleepy Hollow Dairy in Petaluma, which, according to the association, had been a source of superior Holstein stock from the time Herzog became a partner in the business in 1961 until it was sold in 2000.
1966Dave Veith has written a novel, DeLancey's Stapler: Love, Lust, Duty, Doom, Rage, Revelation and Pizza (AuthorHouse), based on his adventures at UC Davis when he lived in Aggie Villa and when "guys had to sign out the girls from their dorms" and female students "wore nylon stockings to the pizza parlor," a period that Veith wrote about for UC Davis Magazine's fall 1997 issue. 1972David Carle recently had his book Introduction to Fire in California published by University of California Press. It is his third in a series of books about Californians and their environment and his ninth book overall. He worked as a state parks ranger for 27 years and also has taught biology and natural history courses at Cerro Coso Community College's Mammoth Lakes campus.
1973Suzanne (Justis) Galloway, Cred. '74, a math teacher at Dixon High School, was chosen the Dixon Unified School District Teacher of the Year for 2008. She has been teaching in Dixon for 34 years and is currently negotiations chair for Dixon Teachers Association, in addition to participating in teacher research with UC Davis for many years.
1976David Benevento, a Folsom chiropractor since 1983, was elected president of the California Chiropractic Association. He and his wife, Rose, have raised two children.    Eric "Ric" Blumhardt, a partner with Walnut Creek law firm Archer Norris, was recently certified as an appellate law specialist by the State Bar of California -- a certification held by only 250 lawyers in the state.   Francine Bradley, M.S. '78, Ph.D. '82, a Cooperative Extension poultry specialist headquartered at UC Davis, was re-elected treasurer of the World's Poultry Science Association, a nearly 4,000-member organization. This is her fourth four-year term as treasurer.
1977Sacramento certified public accountant Gregory Burke, a director in the firm of John Waddell & Co., was elected chair of the California Society of CPAs for 2008-09. With 32,000 members, CalCPA is the nation's largest state association of certified public accountants.   David Katz is the host of Teen Issues Today -- a monthly program on San Francisco cable TV that explores the concerns of teenagers. Katz is also program director of The Young Einsteins Society!, a group of teenage tutors for grades K-8.   Gary Novack, Ph.D., president of PharmaLogic Development Inc. in San Rafael, was named to the board of directors of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. PharmaLogic provides services to the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries during the drug development process.
1978James Miller, D.V.M., M.P.V.M. '82, Ph.D. '83, a professor of epidemiology and community health at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, received its 2008 Faculty Distinguished Scholar Award. This award is given to a faculty member who has made significant contributions to the advancement of veterinary medicine through research and/or scholarly activities.
1979Susan Abplanalp-Weeks retired from the Gap and started her own business, Emery Street Inc., in Emeryville, a garment manufacturing company that produces dresses under the Karen Alexander label.   Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Robert Fracchia, J.D., a Solano County Superior Court judge. A longtime attorney, Fracchia had been a Juvenile Court commissioner.   David Kaslow, vice president in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccines at Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, Pa., was inducted into May to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars for his contributions to the development of vaccines for malaria and other infectious diseases. A former Johns Hopkins fellow, he founded the Malaria Vaccine Development Unit at the National Institutes of Health. He also directed the research and product development that led to clinical trials for vaccines against anthrax, West Nile virus, influenza, HIV and cancer.    The Rev. R. Jerome Thomas is senior pastor and teacher at the Church of All Faiths in Oakland and a commander in the chaplain corps for the U.S. Naval Reserve. He also works frequently with the Veterans Administration, performing burial services for veterans. After graduating from UC Davis, he joined the Peace Corps and taught agriculture at a high school in Kenya. He later earned a graduate degree in divinity studies from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a ministry doctorate from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
1981Paul Harris wrote a book, Diary From The Dome (Vantage Press), about his harrowing experience in the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina. Harris, who works at UC San Diego's Geisel Library, said he wrote the book primarily for therapeutic reasons and will donate 5 percent of any profits to New Orleans organizations.
1983Farhad Amirebrahimi is the author of Rapid Recovery from Back Pain: A Nine-Step Recovery Plan (Health Advisory Group), which is now available to read online at www.rapidrecovery.net. The book is based on New York University's treatment program, along with Amirebrahimi's personal experience and strategies used by Olympic athletes. Amirebrahimi lives with his wife and two children in the San Jose area.
1985New York actress Elizabeth Ward Land, M.F.A., returned to Sacramento's Music Circus in July to perform the role of Elsa Schraeder in The Sound of Music. Her previous Music Circus appearances include A Little Night Music and The Will Rogers Follies.
1986Jamie Lewis Graff is director of Nimbus Arts in St. Helena. Nimbus Arts offers a wide variety of art and science classes, including, this fall, a "Napa Valley Bee Hive Tour," which explored beekeeping culture and hive management.
