Class Notes Archive 1931-2014: Spring 2008

1939Earl McConnell has retired from farming and now enjoys traveling, snow skiing and windsurfing. A member of the first UC Davis swim team, he is still a close follower of Davis sports. McConnell lives in Walnut Creek.
1954Richard Willey died in July 2007 at the age of 78. Mr. Willey was a lifelong Sacramento resident and had worked as a rice farmer in the region. Additionally, he had served as a board member on Reclamation District 1000, Natomas Mutual Water Co., Farmers Rice Coooperative as well as Yolo Shortline Railroad. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, and his children, Sharon Kincaid and Steven Willey.
1962Richard “Doc” Quinn, D.V.M., died in November 2007 at the age of 76. Dr. Quinn was a member of the 82nd Airborne and moved to Davis after his tour of duty to pursue his veterinary studies. After graduation, he opened his own large- and small-animal practice in North Highlands. He later moved to San Diego where he owned small animal hospitals in La Mesa and Chula Vista before retiring in 1981.Survivors include his four children, Joe, Mary Lou, Susan Bird and Jane Quinn Cambell; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
1965Sethanne Howard, a research astronomer and the first woman to receive a B.S. degree from UC Davis in physics, recently published a book, The Hidden Giants (Lulu.com), a profile of more than 400 years of women in science and technology.
1970William Jarvis, president of Jason and Jarvis Associates, consultants in epidemiology and infection control, has edited the fifth edition of the influential reference Bennett and Brachman’s Hospital Infections (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins). Jarvis consults throughout the world on reducing health care-associated infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
1971Burton “Burt” Hatlen, Ph.D., died in January 2008 at the age of 71. Dr. Hatlen was a faculty member at the University of Maine for more than 40 years. He was instrumental in developing the university’s National Poetry Foundation and is remembered for his enjoyment in introducing students to new artistic forms. Survivors include his wife, Virginia, and daughters, Inger Daniels and Julia Hatlen.
1972Dave Faike is retiring after 35 years of service as a forester, entomologist and ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service. During his UC Davis years, Faike, along with fellow students Dave Carle and Bill Kuttner, initiated the Cal Aggie Wheelmen Double-Century bike ride.   James Moore, D.V.M. ’74, was honored at the American Association of Equine Practitioners annual convention as a distinguished educator for his 26 years of service on the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia.   Don Peri’s soon-to-be published book, Working With Walt (University Press of Mississippi) is a collection of 15 interviews with Disney artists, including Ben Sharpsteen ’16. After seeing a painting by Sharpsteen in the 1972 Picnic Day program, Peri contacted the longtime Disney Studio animator, director and producer out of personal interest and was hired as an assistant to write his memoirs. Peri has also been hired by the Disney family to conduct interviews for an archive for the Walt Disney Family Museum, which is scheduled to open in San Francisco in 2009.   Dave Zeuch, Ph.D. ’80, has retired after more than 27 years as a principal member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories. During his last six years at the laboratories, he worked with the systems analysis group doing independent studies for a range of internal and external customers. Zeuch is married to Nena-Joy Almodovar ’73, who retired several years ago after careers in higher education and health care administration. The couple lives in Albuquerque, a base from which they plan to travel, scuba dive, sail and enjoy shotgun sports.
1974Bruce Freeman, M.S., has joined Wrightwood Technologies Inc. as a member of the board of directors, as well as chief scientific officer of the Cherry Instruments division. Freeman has over 30 years of experience in industrial chromatography earned principally at Beckman Instruments, Electronic Associates Inc. and the Fort Dodge Animal Health division of Wyeth. Freeman lives in Neptune, N.J.   Rick Morrrow, M.S., has moved to a new position with San Diego-based Sempra Energy Utilities where he has been employed for 30 years. He is now vice president for customer services.    Kent Steinwert, president and chief executive officer of Farmers and Merchants Bank in Lodi, was appointed to the board of directors of the American Bankers Association. He lives in Lodi with his wife, Patti, and has four adult children and one grandchild.   Edward Vine, M.S., Ph.D. ’80, is one of the 2,000 scientists working on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with whom Al Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Vine works at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. From UC Davis, Professor Daniel Sperling also has a claim to the Nobel. Sperling is the director of the Institute of Transportation Studies and a contributor to IPCC’s most recent report.
1976David Roth is currently a contributing editor to Artweek and a reviewer for Art Ltd. A co-founder of Capitol Public Radio, Roth returned to the area in 1992 after living in New York. Since then, he has served as senior editor of the Sacramento News & Review, communications director for Medic Alert and a communications specialist for the California State Employees Association. His partner, Joan Moment, is a painter and professor emerita.
1977David Katz served as math tutor at Carlmont High School’s motivation center to ensure that students passed the California State High School Exit Exam. While there, Katz created the Carlmont Tutoring Connection, which used the best students to tutor others on campus. The Tutoring Connection has since become the Young Einsteins Society, a teen tutors group and club for which Katz serves as program director.
1978Jackson Gualco was elected president of the Institute of Governmental Advocates, a professional trade association that represents the interests of state-registered lobbyists. Gualco is also a member of the UC Davis Foundation board of trustees.    Kenneth Wilson, a professor since 1991 in the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University, was recently appointed the department head. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Fort Collins.   UC Davis entomology professor Frank Zalom, Ph.D., led a team of five U.S. scientists to China for a two-week agricultural exchange program. The team included several UC Davis alumni: Helene Dillard, M.S. ’79, Ph.D. ’84, professor of plant pathology and director of the Cooperative Extension Service at Cornell University; Michael Hoffman, Ph.D. ’90, professor of entomology and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at Cornell University; and Douglas Walsh, Ph.D. ’98, associate professor of entomology at Washington State University.
1979Ray Jones was recently promoted to chief of the Sacramento Fire Department. Jones is a 21-year veteran of the department. He lives in Roseville with his wife, Kelli, and their three children, Jared, Zach and Cara.
