Art vs. the elements

One of Neil Michel's photos (spring 1997, page 14) showing the first phase of the mural projects decorating the Memorial Union construction walls really caught my eye. The artist busy finishing the lettering "Uniting the World--One Heart at a Time--Bahá-í Faith" is my son, Clayton Russell '92.

Due to frequent rains and study/class schedules, every group effort of the campus Bahá-í Club failed. They asked Clayton, a Bahá-í Club associate, artist and Reiki practitioner, to execute the mural. The photo shows him in the evening. He worked all night adding the design of one black dove and one white dove with a red heart between them. At about 5 a.m. it rained again, erasing his night's labor. Perseverance was rewarded on his next attempt.

The Bahá-í Club has asked him to paint their next mural (Clayton's design) later this summer during the second phase of the mural project.
