'Do Tell

By Barbara Anderson

"Give me lots of hair . . .” And lots of hair there is. Coifs short, long and medium, in colors bright and subdued, artfully arranged or utterly casual, in styles that can only be called eclectic. Intrigued by the variety, we headed out to the Quad one spring noon hour and asked a few students to tell us about their hair. Surprising (to us) was how many guys cut, dye, bleach or otherwise fool around with their own hair; didn’t that used to be a “girl” thing? Take a look, and have a listen . . .

“I do it myself. I got bored with normal hair.” Nicholas Paradiso (left), 3rd-year computer engineering major from Morgan Hill

“I’ve had ’locks for 12 years. It’s a do-it-yourself project.” Kye Epps (right), 3rd-year international agricultural development major from Queens, N.Y.

“It’s naturally curly, and I have to gel it or it gets frizzy. I’m lazy, so I leave it long.” Daniel Amara (left), 5th-year social psychology–political science major from Sacramento

“I just put it up in barrettes. I dyed it bright orange with yellow roots, but now it’s grown out.” Emily Fry (right), 2nd-year animal science major from Palo Alto

“It used to be short, but it poofed out and was horrible, so I let it grow.” Leona Shamoun (left), 2nd-year biological sciences pre-vet major from San Diego

“It takes me two minutes—lots of gel and mousse. I cut the top myself; a friend does the fade for me.” Ken Hoang (below right), 2nd-year communications major from San Jose
