Matching funds give boost to scholarships.
The Campaign for UC Davis has inspired thousands of donors to give more than $111 million to the university in support of students. Now, supporters can multiply the impact of their gifts through several new matching funds:
UC Davis Foundation supports students
Under the leadership of chair Bruce Edwards ’60, current and emeriti members of the UC Davis Foundation Board of Trustees and UC Davis administrators together gave more than $1 million to create a matching fund to encourage gifts to help UC Davis students.
Their university-wide initiative, called UC Davis Foundation Matching Fund for Student Support, will provide a one-time $25,000 matching contribution for new gifts of $25,000 or more made to student support endowments. Additionally, the foundation’s fund provides a bonus allocation of $1,000 so that once the endowed scholarship has been established, it will help students right away. Typically, student support endowments must be invested for a minimum of one year before earnings are distributed through scholarships, fellowships or awards.
The matching funds are expected to inspire new gifts for student support and raise millions of additional dollars for scholarship endowments to help UC Davis students for generations to come.
The UC Davis Foundation, which is governed by a volunteer board of trustees, is a nonprofit organization that works to advance excellence at UC Davis by stewarding private donations to the university.
Power of 10 Scholarship Fund
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the School of Education launched the Power of 10 Scholarship Fund to help its students with the greatest financial need. Several staff, faculty and alumni have already stepped up to provide lead gifts, including matching funds from alumna Sandi Redenbach ’72, Cred. ’73. Redenbach’s gift will match donations to the Power of 10 Scholarship Fund dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $5,000 through June 30, when the initiative ends.
“I owe a great deal of my success to my education at UC Davis. Giving back to help students at my alma mater is one way I have of showing my gratitude,” she said. “It’s the best investment for my money because I feel I get back tenfold what I give.”
Student-led matching fund
The Associated Students of UC Davis launched a matching fundraising initiative this fall to help fellow Aggies in need.
Student government leaders are working to raise $50,000 by June 30 from faculty, staff, alumni and former student leaders for the ASUCD Awards Endowment. ASUCD will match these contributions dollar-for-dollar with up to $50,000 of its own funds.
Since 1999, ASCUD has awarded scholarships of $500 to $1,000 to more than a dozen students annually. President Rebecca Sterling said the matching fund initiative aims to increase the number of those scholarships.
“Even students who receive state or federal financial aid need additional support,” Sterling said. “We wanted to do our part in helping provide students with immediate and direct relief.”
