Our House

From high style to parking woes—a look at student living today.

Off campus, the developers of private complexes are also paying attention to changing student expectations. “Students today want a beautiful place to live,” said Brenda Little, director of property management for Tandem Properties, which owns more than a dozen complexes in Davis. “They want high style at low cost. They want nice finishes. In this market, dated appliances and cabinetry, dark carpets, those things just don’t fly.” She also notes that students desire their own space—their own bedroom, their own bathroom, a place to escape the rigors of college life. Tandem’s response is particularly apparent in one of its newest apartment complexes, Adóbe at Evergreen, with its southwest colors and design, and a community room that looks like a page out of Sunset magazine. Each bedroom—like Justin Rice’s—has its own bathroom—and its own mini-fridge and microwave (top), in addition to the traditional shared kitchen. Photos by Debbie Aldridge.
