Aggies Abroad

Financial Aid

A scholarship fund to help more students study abroad has received close to $84,000 in contributions since it was established in spring 2009 as a tribute to former Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef.

Each year, 4 percent of the endowment will be used to provide financial assistance to UC Davis students on education abroad programs — adding to the approximately $58,000 in aid currently awarded by the Education Abroad Center to defray costs for students each year.

Students who receive financial aid to attend UC Davis make up about 60 percent of study-abroad participants, said Eric Schroeder, who directs the Education Abroad Center. But money remains an obstacle for many others.

In a survey of students who obtained applications but did not join study abroad programs last year, 79 percent said the deciding factor was cost. Of the other 21 percent, about two out of five said they had insufficient financial aid.

The Larry N. Vanderhoef Scholarship Fund for Students and Staff also provides an equivalent amount of aid for the continuing education of UC Davis staff. Learn more in our spring 2009 article.
