Vanderhoef: Some Ways UC Davis Has Changed

During Vanderhoef’s tenure as chancellor, UC Davis:

  • Was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities
  • Increased research funding from $169.1 million to $586 million annually
  • Rose to 10th in research funding among U.S. public universities
  • Rose to eighth among all U.S. universities based on contributions to society
  • Rose to fourth among all U.S. universities in attracting international scholars
  • Increased private gifts from $40 million to more than $200 million a year
  • Added two schools (Education and Nursing) with another (Public Health) in the pipeline
  • Expanded classroom, lab, clinical and office space by 6 million square feet
  • Created a new South Entry to campus, anchored by the Mondavi Center, the Robert Mondavi Institute, under-construction Graduate School of Management building, conference center and hotel Broke ground on West Village, an innovative, affordable new neighborhood for faculty, staff and students
  • Transformed an ailing county hospital to an academically distinguished and financially sound regional medical center Increased its faculty by 44 percent
  • Increased endowed chairs and professorships from 13 to 113 Increased staff by about 40 percent
  • Saw student enrollment grow from 22,000 to 31,000
  • Saw a 45 percent increase in annual degrees conferred
  • Increased intercollegiate sports teams from 21 (12 men’s and 9 women’s) to 26 (12 men’s and 14 women’s, with a 15th women’s sport, field hockey, to be added July 1), and joined Division I
